I’m beginning to wonder if WE know more about their religion than they know.

Many ex-RCs say that is the case. They weren't taught Scripture; they learned the catechism by rote so there is little understanding; just repetition.

But there's always the tried-and-true prevaricators' reponse that they simply say what is convenient, regardless of the truth.

My ex-RC husband says he was taught by Jesuits that it is not lying to lie to a theological opponent. It's prudent and wise.

Remember that Machiavelli was a papist and he wrote a book about the fine art of deception.
