Calvin is saying exactly the opposite of what you wrote. Except for the code word "brethren" he slipped in there. We've been taught by Calvinists on this thread about their meaning of that word and its exclusion of the needy. Before learning about that, I probably wouldn't have noticed what Calvin was really saying.
