Priests are a gift from the Heart of Christ, Pope Benedict says
CNA ^ | 6/13/2010

Posted on 06/13/2010 12:16:24 PM PDT by markomalley

Vatican City, Jun 13, 2010 / 10:58 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Thousands of pilgrims and faithful gathered at noon Sunday in St. Peter’s Square to pray the Angelus with the Holy Father. Before the prayer, he said that the fruits of the recently ended Year for Priests could never be measured, but are already visible and will continue to be ever more so.

“The priest is a gift from the heart of Christ, a gift for the Church and for the world. From the heart of the Son of God, overflowing with love, all the goods of the Church spring forth,” proclaimed Pope Benedict XVI. “One of those goods is the vocations of those men who, conquered by the Lord Jesus, leave everything behind to dedicate themselves completely to the Christian community, following the example of the Good Shepherd.”

The Holy Father described the priest as having been formed by “the same charity of Christ, that love which compelled him to give his life for his friends and to forgive his enemies.”

“Therefore,” he continued, “priests are the primary builders of the civilization of love.”

Benedict XVI exhorted priests to always seek the intercession of St. John Marie Vianney, whose prayer, the “Act of Love,” was prayed frequently during the Year for Priests, and “continues to fuel our dialogue with God.”

The pontiff also spoke about the close of the Year for Priests, which took place this past week and culminated with the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He emphasized “the unforgettable days in the presence of more than 15,000 priests from around the world.”

The feast of the Sacred Heart is traditionally a “day of priestly holiness,” but this time it was especially so, Benedict XVI remarked.

Pope Benedict concluded his comments by noting that, in contemplating history, “one observes so many pages of authentic social and spiritual renewal which have been written by the decisive contribution of Catholic priests.” These were inspired “only by their passion for the Gospel and for mankind, for his true civil and religious freedom.”

“So many initiatives that promote the entire human being have begun with the intuition of a priestly heart,” he exclaimed.

The Pope then prayed the Angelus, greeted those present in various languages, and imparted his apostolic blessing.

I

ASSUME

that those more used to hierarchical structures tend to see things more in pyramids?

Personally, I construe God to be and have and play with and use . . . an infinite number of dimensions as suits HIS fancy in any given context or relationship.

But maybe I’m off base with what you were pointing at.

You asked where Paul quotes God in support of any of his writings and in the certification passage, Paul avers that the gospel he preached was received directly from Christ, i.e. he is repeating what he heard and/or was told to say.

You are very well informed about scripture; much more so than I. Yet I ask as a favor, if you run across a passage where St. Paul says that, could you just send me the location? Because I don't recall one, and I HAVE read the NT through a number of times. Perhaps my dislike caused me to miss something that would be important.

Not to this psychologist at all. NOT by a long shot.

Actually, the assertion sounds like a tanker full of obtuseness . . . at best.

Yeah, I tend to believe God’s Truth right out of the bag—straight away—immediately.

And, when THE LORD confirms things through multiple diverse channels, it’s a graciously wonderful thing.

I didn't cluster "all Proddys" in my post.

Yes.

Perhaps you’d be willing to elaborate with those illustrations in this area of things.

The pyramid view of Scripture - which would be geometry of the Catholic and Judaic belief - values some Scriptures more than others. To the Jew, the Torah is at the top of the pyramid. To the Catholic, the direct quotes of Christ in the Gospels are at the top of the pyramid.

The brane view of Scripture sees it as a whole, each passage bearing on each other passage depending on what one is asking or seeking. It is one "object" of any number of dimensions.

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: - Matt 7:7

Some might prefer the onion metaphor for that view - namely, there is a surface meaning which is easily accessible and ever deepening meanings as the onion is peeled.

However, I prefer the brane metaphor because no matter how deeply one might look, the surface meaning is never discarded.

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. - 2 Cor 11:3

To God be the glory, not man, never man.

"Not to this psychologist at all."

Unlike real science the normative sciences are based upon opinion. If indeed you are a psychologist it only confirms that there must be a sizable Gaussian distribution of capabilities and performance standards within that profession.

Freudian?

Please see my post 873.

We Christians are all looking at the same diamond (Scriptures) but facing different facets and thus in good conscience see things differently. But it is the same diamond and the same Light, i.e. God.

Thank you so much for your question, dear sister in Christ, and for your encouragement!

Yet I ask as a favor, if you run across a passage where St. Paul says that, could you just send me the location?

In the following certification, Paul avers that the gospel he preached was received directly from Christ, i.e. he is repeating what he heard and/or was told to say.

But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught [it], but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.

But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called [me] by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.

Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother. – Galatians 1:11-19

God's Name is I AM.

Show me where Paul quotes God except for the three verses in Acts 9. Show me where Paul quotes God in support of any of his writings.

*Sigh* Do you EVER read the Bible?

Acts 13 :32 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, 33 this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm, "'You are my Son, today I have begotten you.'

34And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way, "'I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.'

35Therefore he says also in another psalm, "'You will not let your Holy One see corruption.'

Acts 13:38 Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. 40Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about: 41 "'Look, you scoffers, be astounded and perish; for I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.'"

Acts 13:46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,
"'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'"

Acts 20:35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

Acts 22:6 "As I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me. 7And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?' 8And I answered, 'Who are you, Lord?' And he said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.' 9 Now those who were with me saw the light but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me. 10And I said, 'What shall I do, Lord?' And the Lord said to me, 'Rise, and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do.'

Acts 23:5 And Paul said, "I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, 'You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'"

Acts 28:23When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets. 24And some were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved. 25And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement: "The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:

26 "'Go to this people, and say, You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.
27 For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed;
lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.'

28Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen."

Romans 2:24 For, as it is written, "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."

Romans 3:4By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, "That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged."

Romans 3: 9What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10as it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one; 11no one understands; no one seeks for God.
12All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one."
13 "Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive." "The venom of asps is under their lips."
14 "Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness."
15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16in their paths are ruin and misery, 17and the way of peace they have not known."
18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes."

Romans 4:5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, 6just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
7 "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; 8blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin."

Romans 4:17 ....as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations"—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, "So shall your offspring be."

Romans 8:36 As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered."

Romans 9:6But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but "Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." 8This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. 9For this is what the promise said: "About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son." 10And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— 12she was told, "The older will serve the younger." 13As it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."

Romans 9:15For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." 16So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. 17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."

Romans 9:25As indeed he says in Hosea, "Those who were not my people I will call 'my people,' and her who was not beloved I will call 'beloved.'" 26 "And in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' there they will be called 'sons of the living God.'"

Romans 9:30 What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; 31but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. 32Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33as it is written,
"Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame."

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
18But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for "Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world."
19But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says, "I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; with a foolish nation I will make you angry."
20Then Isaiah is so bold as to say, "I have been found by those who did not seek me; I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me."
21But of Israel he says, "All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people."

Would you like more? There's plenty more of Paul's writings to go through yet.

In other words, Paul does not quote God except for the three introductory verses in Acts 9. John quotes throughout his Revelation, but Paul doesn't.

I just got started looking up the verses where Paul quotes from God and where he speaks as from God himself. Just read Romans to start with. Good grief! He begins the whole book starting with his authority to speak the gospel.

Romans 1
1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, 4and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 5Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. 6And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. 7To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Skip over to chapter 9 and we read:

1I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit—

And that was just one book and a few verses in it. I think Mark gives us "busy-work" sometimes thinking he can get us frustrated and let him get away with saying whatever he wants without challenge. Wont work! Still like ya!
