The issue is less between the Church and the old guard Protestants, but between the progressives and the conservatives.

The conservative, orthodox Protestants are finding that with the removal of the Church as the guardian of Orthodoxy, their churches have become the churches of men, open to any whim of doctrine that charismatic or determined men can put through. They have substituted the rule of men for the rule of Jesus. And the current state of Protestantism is a direct result.
