What is your understanding of the Catholic Church's position on immigration? What are your sources?
I don't know that the USCCB is synonymous with the Catholic Church, but it is the division which most directly effects US policy. In June of 2009 the USCCB, through a statement from Cardinal Francis George, urged President Bush to enact comprehensive Immigration reform, ie. Amnesty. In fact the Justice for Immigrants committee of the USCCB generally takes the most radical approach to immigration reform possible, as is obvious from just skimming over it's website and archives.
The current head RC guy in the L.A. area has been a vocal proponent of illegal immigration to this country. The RC leadership stands opposed to our laws regarding immigration. This is not new news; it’s been going on for quite a while.
This could be a win-win. Obviously Bishop Jose Gomez’s Hispanic heritage will be a big hit in LA. And according to everything I have read about him, he is quite conservative and is a member of Opus Dei, which is of course, the subject of many left wing conspiracy theories. I am sure he will be much more conservative than one he is replacing.
