NEW YORK TIMES TARGETS THE POPE AGAIN
Catholic League ^ | March 16, 2010 | William Donohue

Posted on 03/16/2010 7:25:56 AM PDT by Pope Pius XII

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the latest attack on the pope by the New York Times:

Once upon a time there was a homosexual priest who was accused of molesting boys in Germany. That was 30 years ago. At the approval of Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger (now the pope), he was sent away for therapy and was later reinstated; years later, under a new archbishop, there was another incident and more therapy.

We know this because the New York Times (which does not like to report on molesting rabbis in 2010), told us about this on Saturday in a front-page article. Today, it ran a front-page article on the same story. Was there any difference? Yes. On Saturday, the Times was only able to identify the priest as bearing the initial "H." Today, it has real news: his name is Hullermann. And now "H" has been suspended.

Yes, just focus on preists and you miss the WHOLE problem which is all through society. THAT is the danger of the focus on priests.

First it was the psychiatrists fault, then the local bishops and now all of society.

Pedophile protectors need to unite behind a single excuse, you are looking rather silly...

All I would ask for is one simple thing: call law enforcement and report abuse when it happens.

Absolutely, when confronted with reliable evidence of probable cause.

Unfortunately, with many of these cases, such evidence was not present, or was not known for many years.

Also, the intimate nature of the crimes makes it far more subject to abuse through false allegations. Given the apparent large numbers of homosexuals in the ranks of the priesthood and those training to be, it is not outside the realm of possibility that at least some allegations are not true and could be motivated by desire to harm the accused for personal reasons.

Indeed, it is my understanding that only a small percentage of these cases involved "pedophilia," as such, and most were with post-pubescent minors.

The notion that sex crime complaintants never lie is what gets us the Mcmartin pre-school and Gerald Amitrault cases.

But any confession, or other unimpeachable evidence, that Church hierarchy ignored, covered up, or sought to minimize by moving the priest...that is unconscionable and cannot be defended.

I have not seen such hatred and venom for the Catholic church such as I see on Freep except for the Liberals.

I don't hate Catholics at all. Many of my family and friends are Catholic and they too are incensed by the sexual abuse cover-ups.

I find it disturbing that you are not of like mind...

You missed the whole point.I never said pedophilia is “society’s fault”...read the comment.

If you focus on a “group” ( ie priests,) you miss that this is a problem in ALL of society and yes we do need to be responsible. No excuses. I don’t see the church making excuses now and they are moving forward.

But the problem is much more widespread, and i am suggesting that we not ignore that it goes on everywhere...and when we focus on one group, we give shelter to those who are not in the targeted group.

maybe the lesson in the Catholic Priests Abuse scandal is that it will highlight the need to deal with pedophilia in all of society.

Watch the documentary. The offending priest said he did it and he even wrote letters to his higher ups, who did nothing.

what do you mean by focusing on one group?

If I suspect abuse on a child is happening by anyone I’m gonna report it to law enforcement.

Please re read my comment.

The victims DO deserve justice. I was pointing to the reality of why OTHER victims do not receive justice and that is because the money is not there for the lawyers.

If we focus ONLY on how awful priests are who molest children, we do deal with a part of the problem, but we can get stuck on never going farther than Roman Catholic Priests and deal with the many, many victims of childhood sexual abuse by family members, and others.

I believe the Church as well as society has learned a very difficult lesson in this whole episode....but if we can not learn from this and move forward and look at the whole problem, we can not help other children.

I am not defending molesting priests, nor those in authority who , when they had information that these men could not be “cured” protected them. I am proud of the steps the church is and has taken to deal with this and I believe this Pope is one who has moved to deal with this.

It is STILL the belief of many Christians ( NOT CATHOLICS)today that many “mental” problems are “only sins “ and enough prayer will “fix that”. And that a “conversion” can “cure” pedophilia...not hardly.

Did “confidentiality “ for the victim ever occurr to you?

Why don’t you take some of the energy you have for protecting children and NOW work in your community to fight pedophilia in other organizations as well, they haven’t received much scrutiny...especially when the focus is never on them as much.

Guess your vitriolic tirade forgot the other churches, schools and organizations and of course...family members, neighbors, etc.

Your rage is limited to a narrow group...to that effect you can not ever deal with the whole problem.

so, in your tirade about “christians” are you including the prtestants? Or are you including non christians in the “2000 years?”

The victims in the majority of these cases are juveniles. Because of that alone the law provides protection for them as victims.

wow..have you thought of a writing career? ha.

It has been “Pavlovian”...and it becomes that on Freep...brings out the Raging Protestants.

Meanwhile for 2000 years child molesters were and still are in every community, many families and other secular organizations....Yet where is the targeted outcry?

Guess if its that ‘funny Uncle”..well, its just too close to home....and that would be too frightening to accept. Let’s keep the “Monsters” in ONE Religious Organization...much safer emotionally than to think, it could be someone in my community, Rotary group or even my family.

But it is much easier if they are part of a class action suit for lawyers who go after a deep pocket....

It is time for us to focus on the WHOLE problem, but that would mean more tax money from everyone to prosecute the cases, and of course “outing” our honorable community members. Much easier just to attack “monsters” in the Catholic church than to deal with them “everywhere.”

who isn’t focusing on the whole problem? If I suspected abuse of an adult on a minor I don’t care who they were, I’d report it to law enforcement.

and that is good.

Yet, that wasn’t a common response in society 30 or 40 years ago...it is in the thousdands of years of human history a very new phenomena.
