Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

And the French version was derived from the Latin version, so I’m OK with putting in the better-sounding-in-this-case French version.

Hunh! Another one of these guys who thinks the meaning matters more than the appearance.

Wow. You'd make a LOUSY Episcopalian! Tuh!

Even Calvin practiced an imperious fascism in Geneva. I love the way that his Consistory was used as the model for the Stasi secret police in East Germany.

In my codeine addled fatigue I'm not sure if it was on this thread or some other where I was yapping with Forest Keeper about how there's Freedom FROM and Freedom TO.

I think that working on Freedom TO might be useful in getting a sense or flavor of Catholic Thought as it touches works and stuff.

WE are saved not only FROM perdition, and even though most if not all of us waver, we find one good work given to us in our saving a work we are freed TO, a new impulse and ability to be grateful to God. We are Saved TO Eucharist, in all senses of the word. Can we all agree on that?

IF we can, then by your courtesy, entertain this: that not only that Good work, that of giving God the praise and thanks he is Due, is offered to us, but other good works as well. They're not burdens or hoops to jump through. They're gifts. He doesn't carry us across the high places. FIRST He makes our feet like hinds feet THEN he makes us tread on our high places. (Habakkuk 3:19, for those keeping score at home.)

Really?

Not my reality.

We do have and follow Scripture, regarding such things, after all!

There’s just something about the corporate welling up of petitions and expressions of thanks and worship en masse that is very invigorating spiritually. I love it, too.

My sense is that God loves it, too.

Sounds like you have an assumpation

. . . incorrect, I must add . . .

That Holy Spirit has not

ALREADY DONE JUST THAT

quite a number of times already in my 63 years.

In fact, St. Paul does teach, in the passage that the Protestants mistake for a sola fide prooftext, that the moment the good work is done out of an obligation rather than freely, it ceases to be salvific:
20 Because by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified before him. For by the law is the knowledge of sin.

21 But now without the law the justice of God is made manifest, being witnessed by the law and the prophets. 22 Even the justice of God, by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all and upon all them that believe in him: for there is no distinction: 23 For all have sinned, and do need the glory of God. 24 Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption, that is in Christ Jesus, 25 Whom God hath proposed to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to the shewing of his justice, for the remission of former sins,

26 Through the forbearance of God, for the shewing of his justice in this time; that he himself may be just, and the justifier of him, who is of the faith of Jesus Christ. 27 Where is then thy boasting? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we account a man to be justified by faith, without the works of the law. 29 Is he the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also. 30 For it is one God, that justifieth circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

(Romans 3)

5 Even so then at this present time also, there is a remnant saved according to the election of grace. 6 And if by grace, it is not now by works: otherwise grace is no more grace.

(Romans 11)

So you also, when you shall have done all these things that are commanded you, say: We are unprofitable servants; we have done that which we ought to do.

(Luke 17:10)

Oh, I don’t know that He hasn’t. It’s just that so many people don’t pay attention to the whole message. Or they simply hear only what they want to hear. Or they mistranslate and get something wrong. God would have all men be saved. Even the regular posters on the RF...

There was a service for retired people where I assisted serving a dinner, with special duet singers which followed. These were people well advanced in age..wheelchair bound or cains and most white haired like silk.

The duet came to a place where they sang, “How Great Thou Art”...and up to this point they were relaxed and just enjoyed the performance..but when they were asked to join in song I saw one of most beautiful movements I’ve ever seen, as one by one,(without any urging from the duet), they slipped out of their seats, helping one another along, and walked forward in song to the stage.

As they sang from their very souls I half expected Jesus train to fill that temple moment as the sound of thier voices lifted His name and Majesty so very high. It was so apparent Christ, by His Spirit, had entered that room....one cannot describe such a moment. They ment business in their worship in song as I have only one other time been a part of.

What a truely awe inspiring moment I will always hold to my heart. Breathtaking as each returned to their seat and the moments ended. Astounding beyond description...as all retuned to ‘normal’. Beautiful to see these 40 0r 50 souls outdo any prepared service or concert I’ve been too, in inviting by their song a special visitation from the Great I Am... Beautiful..just Beautiful... and I was humbled.

YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!

AMEN! AND AGAIN I SAY, AMEN!

Have been in such worship moments maybe . . . 25-35 times or so, in my 63 years. Not even yearly.

Yet wonderous, for sure.

And the top level of that which I’ve experienced . . . maybe 4-5 times . . .

has been when in a massed gathering of some size—250 or more . . . particularly when it’s been 500 or more . . .

and suddenly, in a kind of almost transition lull, suddenly, Holy Spirit will start several different melodies from different parts of the congregation within 5-30 seconds or so of one another . . .

The melodies are distinct yet extremely harmonious as though a symphony with different interwoven melodies were playing out . . . most being led in tongues . . . maybe one or two led in English . . . maybe one or two just voices without word sounds or maybe just humming.

Also, seemingly with angels joining in.

There really are no words to adequately describe such an experience.

In China, it was ALMOST every song service. AT least maybe 70 percent of them. Those hearts were just singing their hearts out to God with all the vigor they could. This was their time to express to God Almighty what He meant to them. It was almost as though the years of persecution and the pent up need to let her rip with other precious saints of like precious faith . . . just flooded out with uncommon intensity. And it was clear, Holy Spirit’s Presence showed God’s delight in their heart-felt worship.

I assure you . . .

Holy Spirit has ways of getting HIS points and message across that mere humans could never dream of.

VERY EMPHATICALLY.

All the more so when individuals are asking Him to do just that.

HAVE NOT CHECKED VALIDITY OF BELOW EMAIL IN ANY WAY. It is, however, greatly plausible.

Essentially, it says, BUY AMERICAN:

One Light Bulb at a Time

A physics teacher in high school, once told the

students that while one grasshopper on the railroad tracks wouldn’t

slow a train very much, a billion of them would. With that thought

in mind, read the following, obviously written by a good American ..

Good idea .. . . one light bulb at a time . . . .

Check this out . I can verify this because I was in Lowes the other day for

some reason and just for the heck of it I was looking at the hose

attachments . They were all made in China . The next day I was in Ace

Hardware and just for the heck of it I checked the hose

attachments there. They were made in USA . Start looking ..

In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects

someone else - even their job . So, after reading this email, I think this

lady is on the right track . Let’s get behind her!

My grandson likes Hershey’s candy . I noticed, though, that it is marked

made in Mexico now. I do not buy it any more.

My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico ... now

I have switched to Crest. You have to read the labels on everything ..

This past weekend I was at Kroger. I needed 60 W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets . I was

in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off-brand

labeled, “Everyday Value . “ I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats -

they were the same except for the price ..

The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the

thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO

and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA in

a company in Cleveland , Ohio .

So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that

are made right here ..

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets . .. . yep, you guessed it,

Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada . The Everyday Value

brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA ! I did laundry yesterday

and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using

for years and at almost half the price!

My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for

everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the

job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so

we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time! Stop buying

from overseas companies!

(We should have awakened a decade ago .. . .. . . . )

Let’s get with the program . . . .. help our fellow Americans keep their jobs and create more jobs here in the U . S . A ..

It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. Psalm 118:8

A local church is a congregation of sinners just like us all. We don't trust in a church, but in God, but we miss out on the fellowship and human touch by forsaking the assembling of ourselves together. Ask the Lord to lead you to a home church - you will know it is when you get there. You may be cheating others out of the joy of knowing you and your testimony! :o)

“It is entirely true that one who has well informed faith will be saved.”

It is not well informed faith. It is Christ.
