Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me
Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience
I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?
I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

When your friends can’t defend their theology, they resort to name calling, perhaps you’ve noticed.

Then why would you, a man who says he is a Baptist, use the term (eucharist) which for 500 years has carried the clear and intentional meaning of re-sacrificing Christ anew with each mass and the "real presence" of Christ's materialistic body and blood in the bread and wine?
What hope is there for Biblical clarity when Protestants adopt the papacy's vernacular? It certainly makes one wonder about motives.

People take issue with us for using Latin, despite the fact that it provides a vocabulary of technical and precise words. Then when we use English they insist on the dictionary description of the common use of a word to interpret a technical document.
I'm sure if someone on the staff asked for a syringe you wouldn't bring him a swamp reed and excuse yourself by looking at the usage of the word over the ages.
Sacramental theology also has a jargon, a technical vocabulary.

Check the site below, I have it on “good authority” that it is a “100% bona fide, official, saint-praying, Mary-worshipping, fish-eating, Roman Catholic website”:

... the term (eucharist) which for 500 years has carried the clear and intentional meaning of re-sacrificing Christ anew with each mass and the "real presence" of Christ's materialistic body and blood in the bread and wine? This is false both as a description of Catholic theology AND as a description of the term "Eucharist." The Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church calls whatever it is with the bread and wine and all that "The Holy Eucharist." Very few Episcopalians believe in transubstantiation, and very many believe in receptionism and virtualism.

Everyone is equal at the table.Amen, we all stand as sinners in need of a Savior
Did you know there is no mention of a role for a priest in the New Testament church? There is no special group of holy people that have the ability to become Christ or have special access to God or an ability to call Christ down from the heavens.. just not there, not taught..

This is false both as a description of Catholic theology AND as a description of the term "Eucharist." I'm sure with some effort and clever planning, future versions of that post can pack in a third dimension of falsehood.

” 11And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
15And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”
17then he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.” - Hebrews 10
Once for all doesn’t mean perpetual, or ongoing.
The Eucharist gives thanks for the love of God expressed in what Christ did for us.
Communion unites us with Him and each other: “17Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” - 1 Cor 10
The Lord’s Supper reminds us he did it willingly, and as the True Passover Lamb - “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
But Jesus isn’t still on the Cross. He has risen, and “he sat down [past tense] at the right hand of God, 13waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.”

When YOUR friends can't attack our theology they make something up, call it our theology, and attack it, after calling our veracity into question.
Just sayin'.

Wow, I don’t think so. I think the ablative case in Latin gives Latin a little more precision. I do think that moving from Greek to Latin was not down without some bumps in the road. Specifically for example, I think “persona” is not such a good translation of “hypostasis.”
