Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

selective judgment

Or lack thereof.

One of the things that ought to lead us to realize that some of our antagonists are not interested in the truth is that they do not ask us what we believe and then debate that. Instead, they TELL us what we believe, whether we believe it or not, insist that we believe it, and then debate that.

They don't care if they are debating what is really the Catholic faith. We know this because they don't trouble to find out what the Catholic faith really is.

Most of my time in these threads is not spent defending what we actually believe. Rather it is spent denying that we believe the preposterous things they say we believe.

And that's how we know there is weakness here, weakness of judgment or weakness of argument.

"The article was even put up by a Roman Catholic as a Roman Catholic Caucus thread! Lol."

Some crack pot churches permit anyone with a keyboard and an opinion to represent them but the Catholic Church does not. They abound in the internet and in this very thread. Any questions about what the Catholic Church actually believes can easily and concisely be found on the Vatican website within the Catechism and the various Encyclicals. There are even actual Catholic organizations and services that will patiently and thoroughly present and explain the Catechism and dogma for those who are truly interested.

Those who grasp and recite the postings of self proclaimed Catholics if and only if they augment preconceived anti-Catholic stereotypes rather than do some basic research do so either out of malice or extreme intellectual laziness.

"Straws being grasped as we speak."

Isn't this just a not so clever way of calling me a liar or a purveyor of something other than the truth? Shouldn't this be copied to the Religion Moderator out of a sense of outrage too?

One other point: the full expression is "Sacerdos alter Christus" -- there is yet another one: "Christianus alter Christus" (to be a Christian is to be another Christ)

Short vague answer: With the rest of the Bible.

I agree with Petronius that the Reformation put the question in a straightjacket.

"... work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for God is at work in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure."

IMHO that rips open the Reformation straight jacket and in its apparent self-contradiction aptly conveys that dance of wills which is God's grace in the redeemed.

I also have been accused on this thread of not being Christian. And I suspect others have been accused in a similar fashion, perhaps with different words and probably back and forth.

I have not accused you of anything; your posts that I have seen have only indicated Christianity. When I do discover significant differences in position between the person's stated position and Christianity, in the course of posting, certainly it is worthy of commentary.

But the three of us, although we may differ in Spiritual insight and have opposing doctrines or understandings of Scripture, worship the same Triune God.

That is an interesting point, yet one might argue that since the understanding of God's revelation to us is sufficiently different that we may be separated in more than just a nominal fashion.

To God be the glory, not man, never man!

Correct and that is something that the whole Church wholeheartedly agrees with.

.......(”Either God is in control or man is in control.”)

God is certainly in charge...and He impresses us and encourages us to make good choices, with a compass to teach us, (the scripture), what He desires...but we choose to do that or not....with success or failure often following, or the simple joy of knowing we have pleased Him....actually that’s the best part.

I do not call FReepers "liars." Even when a few people twist my words, I try to refute the twisting without resorting to name-calling.

Found any good unattributed fabricated antiCatholic photographs lately? Or manufactured their descriptions?

Not easy, but it's a worthwhile goal.

The goal of mankind should be the salvation of all men to spend eternity with the Lord God Almighty, not sashaying up and down sneering at those who are not of the selfdescribed elect.

1 Corinthians 11: 1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. 2 1 I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions, just as I handed them on to you.

We will be Judged on how well we imitated Christ.

“Christianus alter Christus” (”to be a Christian is to be another Christ”)....

Are you saying this as well as your source? Do you believe Christians become or are another Christ? and if so, how can that possibly be?

I know that when God looks at us He sees us thru the finished work of Christ for us and makes us acceptable and loved..forgiven..and His. But we don’t change into another Christ...we still sin... He is and was without sin.

We will be Judged on how well we imitated Christ.

What a sad misunderstanding of Christ.

We will not be judged according to our own righteousness but accordoing to Christ's righteousness, mercifully imputed to us by God for His glory.

As we are sanctified by the Holy Spirit, we become more Christ-like. But we are not now nor ever "another Christ.".

That blasphemy belongs to Rome and its priestcraft.
