Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

I’m all in favor of people using basically ANY name they want to describe the groups they dislike. I would far rather know what a person truly thinks about me.

Precisely!

The small one turns to the big one and says; I don’t understand how you can be so much bigger than me. We’re the same age, we were the same size as kids... I just don’t get it.”

“Well,” says the big alligator, “what have you been eating?”

“Lawyers, same as you,” replies the small alligator.

“Hm. Well, where do you catch’em?”

“Down at that law firm on the edge of the swamp.”

“Same here. Hm. How do you catch’em?”

“Well, I crawl under a BMW and wait for someone to unlock the door. Then I jump out, bite’em, shake the be’jesus out of ‘em, and eat’em!”

“Ah!” says the big alligator, “I think I see your problem. See, by the time you get done shakin’ the be’jesus out of a lawyer, there’s nothing’ left but lips and a briefcase...”

You’re cute and adorable too. ;-D

I’m dating, now that I have been a widow for almost three years...one Catholic man, one Protestant man...sadly, the Proddy is nicer looking, better sense of humor....no need to rush into anything serious, but it is nice to go out.

There are some real gems on this thread, of all kinds. Rubies (red=war, nasty remarks) emeralds (green = growth, lovely intelligent posts) opals (opaque= make absolute NO sense whatsoever) pearls (beautiful = wisdom, dignity) gold (eternal = truth) silver (shining = peaceful) diamonds (clear=purity) onyx (black = hate) — help me out here. ;-D

Help me out here....

We used to say "sticks and stones may break my bones but names can never hurt me." Then again, I'm an oldtimer.

My grandmother taught me that and I teach it to my grandchildren..yea I too am an oldtimer

There is no place for that anymore in our PC world where words are seen as identical to a rod or gun

Hurt feelings....ohhh my poor ego!...What will I DOOOOOOOOOO??????????

Probably won’t have a decision until late March. If you all have room on your prayer lists you might remember this church in its battle.

I will.

IIRC, the case is about who owns the church property. The members of the individual churches want to align themselves with the conservative African church and the liberal American church wants all the property that the local members put the money into maintaining and improving.

rhetorical

Ooh! Playing with big words! Are you sure you're cleared for that?

If you were to trouble yourself to LOOK at the question and its rhetorical thrust, you'd see that if it was suggesting anything it was suggesting that the terms of abuse are NOT used often.

One problem with your side is that you won't take yes for an answer. I say something complimentary and you sniff at it like a fussy cat to see if it contains some insult. In an effort to have civilized conversation I ask a simple question about an objective matter and I get slapped back.

So here I am questioning the notion that you guys go around gratuitously calling us names, and for that I get called a sophist.

"When I am for peace, they are for war."

It's good that you know what rhetoric is and that you think you know what sophistry is. But it's not enough. The rhetoric, if any, was attacking, by question, the notion that you guys call us lots of names or that we think you guys call us lots of names. Just don't try to get me to think that, having rebuffed a gentle overture, you are really men of peace.

stream of consciousness ramblings

A failure to understand something does not, in itself, demonstrate that the thing is incomprehensible. It can demonstrate that the person making the attempt is not up to the task.

When somebody mistakes an argument for stream of consciousness, I pretty much know where the problem is

Romish

Ah, a gentleman to the last.

Oh, that reminds me of that old story about heaven and hell — the guy died, and travelled to the afterlife. There were two dining rooms, one where everyone was sitting around a table loaded with everything delectable, but their eating utensils were 3 feet long, and they couldn’t get anything to eat, so they were arguing and bickering ane even hitting each other with their spoons!

The other dining room was exactly the same, everyone was sitting around a table loaded with everything delectable, and their eating utensils were also 3 feet long, but they were happy, and munching everything with great appetite—they were feeding each other!

So the guy says to St. Peter, “What’s going on?” and St. Peter said, “The room where no one is eating is hell.”

I’m not sure I told it right, but we should wash one another’s feet, serve one another, LOVE one another. Telling me I’m worshipping idols is NOT loving me, because the Lord Jesus Christ, Risen Son of the Living God, is my Savior and shows me mercy even unto His death on the cross.

I work as a volunteer in a Catholic food kitchen one day a week, cooking, cleaning, serving, etc. Anyone can come in, poor, rich, anyone. We serve some terrific food, too. I’m washing tables and cleaning up one day, and two pentecostals are sitting at a table finishing eating, arguing LOUDLY about which one went to the right church.

FWIW, the different churches serve meals on different days of the week, so there’s always a place to get a hot lunch and a blessing.

Rhetoric upon rhetoric. Funny how the very next post showed the true rhetoric.
