Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

When the Gospel is subverted by false doctrines and self accolade, as occurs in the RCC...

There does seem to be quite a lot of that in the Raving Calvinist Covens.

In any event you are doing a fine job.

Why are you assuming it’s a ref. These days, could be the players.

"I can only testify that if I ever made a good choice, I was the most surprised person in the room, and that my perception, not my thought — my FEELING was the the good decision was given to me or happened for me or .. ANYTHING but that it’s mine. All I can add is sin. That’s not a logical proposition, it’s a reluctantly reached conclusion. (Except once you reach it, it’s kind of cool.)"

Wow, Mad Dawg, you better be careful or you will turn into a reformed thinker. That is spot on what we are getting at. The good I do, if it is good in God's eyes, is really that which the most Magnificent Genius in the Universe, our Heavenly Father, wrought inside of me. With Paul we cry, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, FOR it is God at work in you BOTH to WILL and to DO for His good pleasure." Phil.

I'm sure you have quoted this a number of times to your parishoners, but it captures the essence of the reformed view. It harmonizes with being clay in His hands, those beautiful, terribly holy Hands that can make men as vessels for destruction and vessels for honor. There is little that I bring to the party. And, while it may not be "logical" to the unbeliever, we know that this is why we know God is God. He is the Creator and Sustainer, the Prime Mover, the Only One full of power, glory and light. We are the sheep of His pasture and He chose us, we did not choose Him.

Could be, but the games is played by rules so a tainted ref will have more influence than a single player. A single player can be removed from the game for poor play but the ref is assumed to be fair.

But there's something "surrounding" about God that I don't think/feel about individual saints. I mean if I mean to be with God intentionally, I don't often make a lot of petitions. Generally it's more a matter of just being there. Yeah, I know that's inchoate. Sorry.

Actually, I couldn't agree with you more that spending good time with God is a lot more than just asking for stuff. I think spending time with God also includes things like getting to know Him better through reading His word and being in the spirit of prayer of thanksgiving. Sometimes my prayer contains few if any material petitions. So, would you say you (you all) spend time with any Saints in this type of way (in the spirit of prayer of thanksgiving to the Saint)? It seems to me that many of the Marion prayers I have read on the Vatican website have that flavor.

If so, it might be a distinction in the comparison of prayer to Saints to asking a friend for prayer. I certainly will thank my friend for praying for me, but I wouldn't spend specific time with him over and over again for just that purpose.

"Various "infallible in matters of faith" Roman Catholic popes have referred to Mary as a "co-redeemer.""

Please cite your sources. Although there is some advocacy within the Church by some of its bishops the official position of the Church is that Mary is "Redemptoris Mater", the Mother of the Redeemer.

The Church also recognizes Mary's special cooperation in the redemptive sacrifice because of the importance of Mary's consent and obedience in the work of our salvation.

So you mean to say that you don't like Quix's missionary work because it's no using preaching the Gospel? Because as per your calvingod, those in Asia aren't the "elect upper-caste" so there is no point telling them about The Word as Quix and the Baptists and Pentecostals and Catholics have done?

This kind of idiotic blather is what results when RCs cannot defend a belief in the anti-Scriptural errors of "another Christ," baptismal regeneration, transubstantiation, the "infallible" papacy, praying to the stock of a tree, and deeming Mary as a "co-redeemer."

Presbyterians as well as Baptists and Pentecostals lead the world in mission work, and have for centuries.

It is the Roman Catholic church who believes it is not necessary to preach the Gospel because they don't consider the hearing and receiving of the Gospel to be transformative. That task, according to Rome, belongs to RC baptism and the eucharist, which are a dreadful, anti-scriptural errors.

Because of the tremendous missionary work being done by Presbyterians, Baptists and Pentecostals, there are now more Christians in China than in the U.S., all by, for and through the grace of God alone.

In fact, the two fastest growing churches in South America are the Pentecostal church and the reformed church.

As God wills.

And thankfully, Baptist, Pentecostal and Presbyterians don't follow the missionary method of the historic RCC - "convert or die."

I propose . . .

fingers not all THAT much in cheek . . .

that you put letter combinations in a hat . . .

AB, ZD, QE . . . WHATEVER . . .

Alphabetize all the distinguishable groups hereon . . . perhaps after a period of inviting for all such to step forward . . .

and then go down the alphabetized list assigning as drawn from the hat . . .

SAID RANDOM LETTER COMBINATIONS as GROUP NAME LABELS HEREON.

The KEY COULD BE ON THE RELIGION MODERATOR HOME PAGE.

It would be a bit obscure at first for lurkers and newbies . . .

as though these rantings weren’t obscure anyway . . .

However, in short order, everyone would know what the more frequently mentioned groups were called and who went under what umbrella.

I realize, of course, that within 6-18 months, there will be blood thirsty rants about how some group’s random letter combination label

is somehow inherently MORE HOLY than someone else’s

probably even claiming some obscure scratching on some cave wall about AD 150 as proof.

At that point, I’d say, flush em . . . the whiners, that is.

"Various "infallible in matters of faith" Roman Catholic popes have referred to Mary as a "co-redeemer." "

To further educate you on your error the Church's teaching makes a clear distinction between the Mother and the Son in the work of salvation, explaining the Blessed Virgin's subordination, as cooperator, to the one Redeemer.

Your side seems to take it as a personal offense that there IS another side and uses that carefully harvested and cherished injury as an excuse to give useless and gratuitous offense.

Hmmm...

When was the last time you read anyone on this forum crying "Anti-Protestant bigot?"

Answer: never.

The same cannot be said for the daily, defensive howl of "Anti-Catholic bigot" shouted from nearly every thread on the religion forum.

As for taking "offense," we've learned that Roman Catholics believe any and all questioning of their doctrines to be "offensive" to them.

Thus the endless hurling of the pejorative "bigot."

I've never been to Rome, so I don't know.

As for me, questioning the doctrine is just fine.

LYING ABOUT IT will bring a reply every time I see it.

And if there are no cries of "anti-protestant bigot," it seems to be a pretty good indication that there are none.

Jewish Israel has been blinded "in part". Not totally

The parable of the seed falling on the ground is about believers. Only the seed that falls on "good ground" ever sprouts.
