I would not take his allowing Rifqa to be a cheerleader as ABSOLUTE evidence that he is tolerant just yet. Not especially when people have testified that Rifqa's parents never saw her in her cheerleader's uniform. The cheerleaders had a warm-up suit; when Rifqa dressed to go to games, she had the warm-up suit on, never the cheerleading skirt.

I tend to view the cheerleading as solid evidence that the parents *were not* intolerant/extremist Muslims, but it doesn’t really tell us what they *are* now. Rifqa may not be the only member of the family with a newfound religious zealotry.
