Modern English has strayed farther from that than modern French, Spanish, and Italian have strayed from Latin.
I saw an interesting book once, a history of the world from a linguistic point of view. The Germanic languages, the author said, were never really able to spread in the way the Latin-based languages did and mostly withered when confronted with them. English was able to survive by grafting Norman French into itself.
