Speaking of telephone songs, for the last few days I’ve had Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show’s “Sylvia’s Mother” going through my head.

I like their cover of Only Sixteen. Coming of age in the Seventies, I didn't find out about the Sam Cook original until later. (I still like the Dr.'s better!)

I have a "beef" with the term "cover version" ... implying that the first crew to record a song somehow owns it (it was usually written by a professional songwriter not the band) and that anybody else who records it is necessarily derivative or inferior.

Baloney.

Sometimes the next guy gets it much better.
