Harold Camping started going down this road years ago. Mid eighties he had one line where it was time to stop evangelizing, the role of the church was at that point just to keep believers from falling away. Believers were to have as little as possible in dealing with the outside world - an extreme version of what I call “bomb shelter Christianity”, where everyone is just huddled in their bomb shelter church, lest they be contaminated by the outside. He sounds like he is afraid to smile or laugh, it might be sinful (I knew some Christians that had that point of view, they also listened to a lot of Camping).
I was coming back from vacation last summer and I turned on the scan option of my stereo to just listen. A Christian talk show came up and I listened. The elderly host was commenting on these things and I felt uncomfortable in my spirit about them. The words false prophet came into my mind. When the station break came up it mentioned that it was Harold Camping.
Jeremiah 23:1-4
Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. 2Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord.
