The Madness of Harold Camping (The founder of FAMILY RADIO keep setting dates for Christ's return)
Exposing Darkness ^ | July 2009 | Robert Gianserra

2 Peter 3:16 “There are some things in them (the letters of Paul in the NT) that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harold Camping is the president and heretic in chief at Family Radio International. For those of you who have the privilege of getting Family Radio broadcast in your area, you probably have mixed feelings. While driving your car, or working on some project, it may be hard to find a station to listen to that is spiritually edifying. Then comes Family Radio. Hymns, Bible reading, prayer, etc. It seems like an oasis of spiritual refreshment in the middle of an airwaves desert. Then comes Harold Camping in a bible study hour. Then his Open Forum. And what do you hear? The world is coming to an end May 21, 2011. According to an advertisement on Family Radio, Harold Camping has figured out the time of the Lord’s coming with “great accuracy” to the day, year, and hour. Sound crazy? It is.

Harold Camping is mad (out of his mind). Not only is he mad, but he a false prophet, and guilty of twisting the word of God. This is nothing new for him either. It all started back in the early 90’s when he believed the world would end in 1994, and made a prediction for the second coming of Jesus. As expected 1994 came and went and Jesus did not return. After being humiliated most people thought he would repent and admit he was wrong. But instead, Harry had a new plan. In his own words, he got, “new information from the bible” revealing to him that what really happened in 1994 was that the church age had come to an end. The corporate church was no longer to exist. The ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper were to cease, pastors to resign, and churches to fold. According to Camping, God had pronounced judgment on the church for infidelity and therefore any true Christian must heed the warning to “flee the church or come under the wrath of God.” All of this is backed up by a hermeneutic that is based on an allegorical interpretation to all of scripture. As a result, Camping can essentially make the bible say what ever he wants. All of his interpretation of scripture now was pointing to the end of the church age. It gets worse.

In the last year or so, Camping has went out on a limb and declared that this time he got it right. Jesus is coming back on May 21, 2011. On that day true Christian will be raptured and everyone else will come under the judgment of Christ for a period of five months, ending on October 21, 2011. Once this one got some traction he went even further. According to more “new information” he is getting from the bible, the doctrine of Hell is a false doctrine. It was devised by man for the purpose of intimidating people. According to Camping, when an unbeliever dies, he will face God on judgment day and then be annihilated (or cease to exist).

Harold Camping has made some audacious and bold claims. While most Evangelicals do not take him seriously, there are enough who do. Sadly Harold Camping has “upset the faith of some”( 2 Tim. 2:18) back in 1994 by misleading people to believe that Christ was returning. He has continued to do this by misleading people to leave the local church which is “The pillar and buttress of truth” 1 Tim. 3:15, and is again misleading people to think the end of the world is coming in 2011.

Consequently I felt led to post a few articles exposing Camping for who he is. He is not a brother, nor a teacher of the word. He is a false teacher and is guilty of misleading many of God’s people. The bible tells us in Matt 18:6 “whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” Today is just an introduction to the madness and insanity of Harold Camping. I do pray and hope that he will repent before he dies as he is an old man. And to be fair he was a sound teacher for many years before he went down this road. Nonetheless he will be accountable to God for twisting scriptures and will face judgment unless he repents.

Is this “Family Radio” the shortwave station from Scituate, Massachusetts and Lake Okeechobee, Florida?

Yep, that’s the one. WYFR. They and HCJB (”The Voice of the Andes”) in Quito, Ecuador were the two main Fundamentalist Protestant shortwave stations back when I used to listen and collect QSL cards. I think the Internet has now sort of made shortwave obsolete.

Love your tagline ("Dispensationalists Say The Darndest Things!"). There's been at least one post defending Camping on another thread. I wonder if we'll get any technicolor commentary in defense of Harold Camping?

Sure, why not...

I don't know anything about this guy but on this particular topic, I can not see where believing Jesus will return on one day as opposed to another will have even the least bit to do with the salvation of that believer...

I mean it's not like this guy is telling people they have a place in heaven because someone dripped some water on them and they ate a cracker named God...

The man also holds a lot of strange beliefs.

Camping teaches that “the work of the church is finished,” and that those who remain in the church, during the time of the on-coming “tribulation,” will be destroyed. He thus bids the faithful to flee the church. He goes so far as to suggest that if one were to find a church “where it appears that each and every doctrine they hold is faithful to the Word of God,” it should be avoided — if one hopes to escape the impending destruction.

Harold Camping teaches that the Holy Spirit is NO LONGER working in the church!

Harold Camping teaches that EVERY church in the world is apostate!

So, do you go to church ? If you do, according to Camping, you won't escape the impending destruction.

Camping also teaches that there will be no eternal damnation of the unsaved but they will simply be annihilated. Camping also teaches that Jesus, as the Christ, died before the foundation of the earth, and then BECAME the Son of God upon His resurrection: the cross then is just a "representation" of what He did in eternity past!

The cross does not pay for sin, as that was done prior to the Incarnation! This incredibly absurd belief, which overthrows every possible part of the Bible's teaching on the cross, the incarnation, atonement, etc., is just another example of the fact that once you are cut loose from the foundation of Scripture, there is no end of the silliness you can end up promoting.

This man is a prophet of the devil. He has been assigned to spread nothing but lies and propaganda.

No one can determine the end of time other than the Lord himself. He knows when and according to the bible, we will know that it is time when it actually gets here. This is repeated a number of times in the New Testament.

He is a rude and obnoxious man who needs to be taken off the air for immoral and outrageous behavior. How could a religious program like this continue to have him on the air. They need to find someone who is morally and ethically correct to take over and make it worth listening to.

The problem with Harold Camping is he is at this point in time, UNTEACHABLE.

Years after his first debacle ( he predicted Christ would return in 1994 and wrote a book about it ), pastors, teachers and elders have all tried to reach out to him to stop this madness. They’ve tried to counsel him, advise him, warn him at first privately, then publicly, to no avail.

One of them is Dr. James White, who actually challenged him to a public debate. You can hear portions of the debate here :

http://www.monergism.com/directory/link_category/MP3-Audio—Multimedia/All-North-American-Speakers-Messages/James-White/James-R-White-vs-Harold-Camping-Debate/

He not only refused to listen, he also continued to add strange doctrines to his teachings, chief among them is that the churches have ALL become apostate and it is useless to attend ANY of them at all.

It’s sad really as his radio station still airs some very good programs ( except his own teachings ). It is one of the very few stations in the country that still plays good old fashion traditional hymns as opposed to the Christian Contemporary Music we hear in a lot of stations.

Man I think he really has gone crazy. I listened to him in 1989-1991 and he was nothing like this. I actually learned stuff from him.

What you say is very true. Here is the confirmation for the scenario you stated very well. Paul to Titus Chpt. 3:8-11

8The saying is sure I desire that you insist on these things, so that those who have come to believe in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works; these things are excellent and profitable to everyone. 9But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10After a first and second admonition, have nothing more to do with anyone who causes divisions, 11 since you know that such a person is perverted and sinful, being self-condemned.

I wonder what will become of his ministry when May 21,2011 ( the exact date he predicts Christ will return ) comes and goes away and nothing happens.

Will the true believers in his ministry still stay ?

Also someone needs to share with old Howold II Peter 2 where St. Peter takes to task false teachers where old Howold is because he knows what the true gospel message is and has departed from the faith into cultism.

I heard Harold again yesterday afternoon.

He’s convinced the Rapture will occur 21May, but this time he simply leaves off the year. In his mind everybody will only be thinking about death and misery after 21 May.

I think he is on the wrong track, but it would be interesting to see his take on verses such as nobody shall know the day or the hour.
