Your interpretation is faulty and the Doctrine & Covenants is scripture to me. If you cannot respect that, I cannot respect any of your opinions.

I suppose that if someone can extrapolate baptisms for the dead from that verse, then it doesn't really matter what they call scripture... because the meaning of any doctrine could come from anywhere. Surely there is a better example from the BIBLE where followers of Jesus were encouraged or commanded to offer up prayers or baptisms for the dead. If Jesus is the same today as He was yesterday, and never changes, then what He preached in the Holy land should match up with what He supposedly preached in the Americas... and before one can establish a practice or doctrine as sound in LDS scripture, It will have to be established in scripture that both faiths recognize... otherwise that practice in question is nothing more than a lie from Satan himself... from a "typical protestant's" point of view.

The argument that one must recognize something as infallible BEFORE they can gain respect from another is total foolishness and the folly of contemptible pride.
