I'm joining the Catholic Church next month. Advice/Books/Etc.?

Posted on 05/28/2008 6:05:04 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.

Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.

Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.

This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.

I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.

Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.

As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.

Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?

Methinks there is great confusion concerning a Papal Encyclical (an "infallible" one no less) and Scripture.

I always make it a point to read your posts. You pointed out the nebulous nature of what is "infallible" or not.

He took the Scriptural passage that "outside the Church there is no salvation"

Does anyone want to educate the poster where the phrase originated? If not I won't tell. ;-0

It’s a particular kind of OCD, something akin to a fetish about a particular Church, melded with a pathologically-obsessive drive to lie about members of that Church.

It is obviously a man’s opinion, and following a man’s opinion, not God’s, is what led to the priest’s problems.

Wait a minute!

Aren't they part of a hierarchy? One of the principle features of a hierarchy is obedience to those above you.

He wasn’t even baptized until he was convinced he was dying.

In that he was following the lamentable practice of the day.

Well that’s what it is, a Catch 22. They told the priest that, then when he took them at their word, then they weren’t happy!

See #839 above; all the research is there.

Constantine as Emperor was the head of the Roman religion.

He had the Pagan title of Pontifex Maximus, the high priest leading
those who died over the bridge to haSatan.

He called the Council at Nicea,
he presided over it and
he promulgated the results to the Empire.

Which is quoted in # 839 above.

He was never a follower of the Christ.

Some believe that he may have been baptized
by a heretic on his death bed.

He ordered the celebration of Easter, a Pagan feast

and the prohibition of celebrating of Passover and First Fruits
which were celebrated by Yah'shua as the "last Passover"
and the day he rose from the dead.

I retired in 1994. Human nature doesn’t change, does it.

I’m still absolutely fascinated with our spaceman though and I haven’t seen any posts in awhile.

Yes, Easter is a “Moveable Feast.” The first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. IIRC.

But, Constantine the Emperor was not a pope.

Easter is a pagan feast.

Passover is always the 14th of Nisan.

Yah'shua's crucifixion was on the 15th of Nisan.

He rose from the dead on the day
following the shabbat following passover.
Most likely after night fall after shabbat.

Constantine was never a pope as the term had not been invented.

Well, whether it’s Michael Newdow or some posters here, it shouldn’t be excused or explained away. OCD is controlling and can snowball. Pitifully, when it is not controlled by medication, it can take over a person’s life.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to be the enabler in the situation.

Look at Cindy Sheehan. Basically the same thing. She cracked after her son was killed and began compulsively blaming everyone. When no one stopped her, she continued on. Look at her now, her supporters have left her, the MSM is gone and she is crying for attention. If they had discouraged the irrational thoughts at the beginning, she would be better now.

Although she really is more into the Borderline Personality Disorder Diagnosis, doubled with the Post Traumatic Stress of her son untreated, she went off. It can happen when inappropriate behaviors are encouraged.

Looks like it to me! http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/2014373/replies?c=17

"I would simply tell you the answer. The Bible is the Word of God. Since Jesus is the Word, they are one and the same."

Iffy. I am not certain grunthor would claim to be holding the flesh and blood in his hands. Perhaps, if he is lurking, we may have an answer.

On the other hand:

John 1:
[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

I used to engage here in petty squabbling with "reformed" Christians. It then occurred to me that this is primarily a political website and that the distinctions between the Catholic Church and the "reformed" church, however important in the spiritual sense, are not going to serve a profitable political purpose here.

This leaves me with several observations relevant to your craving for "scriptural" debate and your desire for yet another round of ritual Catholic bashing.

1. You are making the obvious mistake of those devoted to YOPIOS (your own personal interpretation of Scripture) of imagining that well-catechized Roman Catholics have the slightest interest in your idiosyncratic ideas and interpretation of Scripture. Answering ANY Scriptural query of the YOPIOS set amounts to nothing more than an invitation to endless, tiresome, mind-numbing, time-wasting yakfests which will wind up converting neither you nor me. If you want Catholic views explained, find an orthodox Roman Catholic scholar capable of explaining the wisdom and truth of the Teaching Magisterium to you. It is not hard to find one. Of course, a legitimate search of that sort does not provide much of a venue for showing off what you imagine to be Scriptural knowledge or for abominable preachiness.

2. When we have put an end to abortion, lavender perversion posing as "marriage," and the various evils of our mutual enemies and those of our Savior, we can think about the luxury of gang-fighting each other in public. We Catholics are not going to win public policy fights without the sincere Christians of "reformed" views and you guys are not winning without us.

3. I have every interest in seeing people of whatever persuasion ACT like Christians and no interest whatsoever in engaging you folks in useless argument. I was baptized in infancy (whether you like it or not) as a Catholic, confirmed as a teenager in that Faith, and I have every intention of dying as a Roman Catholic. Nothing whatsoever that you or any other "reformed" Christian may wish to preach at me is going to change that in the slightest.

4. Get out your Concordance and do your own Scriptural research.

5. I expect that this will be my last post on the subject whether you choose to reply or not. Some of your buddies are already on my list of FReepers to ignore over issues having nothing whatsoever to do with Catholic vs. "reformed."

He wasn’t even baptized until he was convinced he was dying.

Assuming, that is, that he was ever baptized.

You have a genuine gift for economy of words while not sacrificing the Truth or compromising it in any way. God bless you and yours.

Easter is a pagan feast.

Easter celebrates the death and Resurrection of Christ.

Constantine was never a pope...

He was never head of the Catholic Church.

...as the term had not been invented.

Many many things have existed before the term for them was invented. The suggestion that a thing does not exist until named is absurd.

***”These people” comprehend the RCC’s position.***

Um, no they don’t. We have pointed out time and again that what “these people” think are the beliefs of the Catholic church are, in fact, NOT. Yet they persist in posting the same falsehoods, again and again. So I can only conclude that they have a comprehension problem, a memory problem, or that they are just obstinate. Either way, until they can back up their assertions with references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (which is the true teaching of the Church), I personally will never take anything they say seriously. “These people” are preaching to the choir - themselves.
