As in Matthew 8:8 the priest leads us in asking forgiveness from Christ, he does not assume the power of absolution unto himself.

Yes ... Catholics (should) know that all Grace, whether received through the Sacraments or otherwise, comes from God. The Priest's authority (power) to do any priestly duty comes from God and is utterly dependent upon God.
