for instance, almost my entire belt of coworkers who have attended church with me, only one has ever stepped foot into a non-Catholic church

What, Catholics don't count?

Fabulous post!

Thank you for posting it.

This is the heart of it for every self professing Christian out there:

“Every day I work here at UPS, people are pushing their religion upon me. They are atheists and live like there is no God, there is no day of accounting, there is no purpose in life except living for oneself. And everyday, that religion is preached from one co-worker after another, calling me to unbelief, and I am offended by that. Everyday I hear godless talk, my Savior’s name slurred, and hear of things that used to make people blush, and I am offended by that. Without fail, my coworkers are being entirely intolerant. One would tell me of their love and passion for Kentucky basketball and another for Louisville football, and to believe contrary to them would be against their “religion.” Yet I have the same passion and devotion, not to sports or girls or parties, but Jesus Christ. So why is my “religion” the only one being called out here at UPS? Why am I the only person who is being labeled judgmental when I am doing the most merciful thing in telling people about the love of Jesus Christ? If we were to apply the same standard to others as you are applying to me, we would have to shut down all conversation among all co-workers from this moment on, and believing that will not happen, then you have forced yourself to settle with a double-standard predicated upon hearsay of those who found a portion of my conversation as offensive. On the other hand, I exhort you to visit with everyone of my coworkers and supervisors for the past three years, people who I have worked with and talked to on a daily basis, and determine whether the claims uphold any warrant. If at that point you believe that I am unfit to function as a trainer at UPS, I would resign immediately in deference to your judgment and the goodwill of UPS. But I want to make it clear to you that this is not about me, and it has never been about me. Young men like my new hire need someone who will actually take personal interest in them and want to genuinely help them in life, not shove them off like a package on a conveyor belt, and I am of the opinion that those whom I have been given to train, they will be to me of greater worth than a package to be delivered in five days but hopefully a friend for many days to come.”

Many have allowed others to stamp their belief because it is not politically correct. By doing this it makes it easier for even the believer to NOT believe.

I work with a guy like that, very religious type of person.

I on the other hand am an “arch-atheist” (his words). We’ve had some pretty interesting conversations but I’ve hardly felt that he was preaching to me...even if he was it’s not like I can’t just ask him to stop.

It is very powerful. It will be interesting to watch how many focus only on one phrase in the whole thing.

From Cool Hand Luke

Boss: Sorry, Luke. I’m just doing my job. You gotta appreciate that.
Luke: Nah - calling it your job don’t make it right, Boss.

Good testimony, and a humbling account that convicts me of my lack of boldness.

Brings up an interesting point though - about the cross as jewelry. A believing friend of mine and I were discussing the over-use of the cross as a symbol.

When you have non-professing Hollywood ‘stars’ who live their lives in any way BUT Christian, but you see them with enormous cross bling around their necks - you run a risk of devaluing the true nature of the cross.

We were also discussing the propensity to place a cross at the grave of someone who showed no signs of being a Christian, and what does that do to the value of the cross?

Interesting things to think about.

Some years ago, while in the Navy and TAD because of an injury, I was assigned to work alongside a woman. Our job was mundane and gave us plenty of time to read. I was at the beginning of my search for God and so was reading the Bible, while she would bring in the fanzines and read those. She was greatly offended that I would dare read the Bible. I never preached to her, never said - hey, listen to this. I just read the Bible.

Some people - I learned - are greatly offended if you just mention God. If these people do not believe in God - that He does not exist and is basicaly something made up like Santa Claus, Superman, or werewolves - than why the fear of something imaginary? I know the answer.

I read this on another FR thread today. It is appropriate here:

Where there is no offense, there is no effect.

Just as interesting is how many think unbeliever = Catholic.

No kidding, and definitely weird from my perspective. But then, I grew up in a region with virtually no Baptists, who appear to be the ones who most often hold this view.

I have always wondered whether this is the source of some of the outright hostility to many Mexicans and others from south of the border. I most certainly share the disgust at the numbers of illegals in this country and their total disrespect for immigration law, but I wonder whether much of the backlash comes from people who also don't see them as Christian.

I like this. I can overlook the little dig at us filthy papists. Good witnessing and good commitment and an example to all of us.

I'm guessing, "The Adversary". I htink for many people the choice they present to themselves is (a)I can acknowledge that this nagging sense of guilt might be here because I truly AM guilty, and I need to change my life, and mayube even think about this God 'n Jesus stuff, or (b) I can yell, interiorly, that that's all primitive superstition and judgmentalism and keep on hoping that the next romp in the hay or the next job or the next car or the next whatever will scratch the unscratchavle itch and heal the always suppurating sore in my heart. And the latter is less work in t he short term, so it wins, but the persistent itch and ooze is harder to ignore when people like you remind them that there just might be something of value in all the Jesus stuff -- something worth ripping your life out by the roots and transplanting it for ....

Just guessing here ....
