That parallels (like the rest of the movie) the story of The Odyssey... When the three men meet the girls in forest (representing the Sirens) who seduce then and take Delmar away, Pete and Everett find a toad sitting on Delmar’s clothes.

Pete concludes Delmar has been turned into a toad so they don’t go looking for him and thus are unaware he’s been taken to prison.

So when they meet Delmar later, “We thought you wuz a toad” is Pete’s explanation for why they did not try to find him when he was taken by the Sirens.

Sorry that’s so long winded.

OH! Now I remember! Thanks for the explanation....I guess I’ll have to break out the DVD and watch it again, LOL.
