The various Mormons I’ve known have all been good people who loved their neighbor, worshiped God and asked forgiveness in the name of Jesus when they did wrong.

And that's exactly what this is not about. "Being good" does not save one from hell. Belief in Christ does. But THE CHRIST who can is the One Who is God the Creator. Changing Who He is, from Creator, without beginning and without end, to merely a creature being, alters everything about Him, and denies His very essence.

I think it is clear that Joseph Smith was, at best, deluded and more likely, not honest.

Exactly the point. Dishonest = less than a true prophet of God. The Scriptures show that one of the tests of a true prophets is that they do not lie; another is that 100% of their prophecies come true and are 100% accurate. On just both of those counts, therefore, Joseph Smith comes short of being a true prophet of God.

Um, you might want to reread godramB’s #471. Whom is saved is in God’s purview. We may haggle over doctrines and such, but it is God Whom decides each one’s ultimate destiny based upon that which He has chosen to take out of our viewing range. We are ordered to oppose false doctrine and false teaching, but we ought not go too far in our assessments and assignations.
