Wow, Joseph sure looked stern. Bet he was a good sheriff. Nobody would want to cross him (smile).

Wow, Joseph sure looked stern. Bet he was a good sheriff. Nobody would want to cross him (smile).

He took an 8 year old orphan girl into his family in Nauvoo, IL and brought her across the prarie to Utah.

When she was 15 she fell in love with her tutor. The tutor was sent away, and she was married to Joseph L Heywood, a 46 year old man with two other wives. This was typical.

Today it would be called abuse, just as it truly is.

Here is a book written based upon the journals of Martha Spence Heywood (JL Heywoods's second wife.) It is an interesting read, and tells the heartbreak of polygamy.

Not by Bread Alone
The Journal of Martha Spence Heywood, 1850-56
by Martha Spence Heywood
Edited by Juanita Brooks
Salt Lake City: Utah State Historical Society, 1978 (141 p.)

She's quite a looker....

No Wonder JL Heywood married my ggg-grandmother 15 yr old Mary Bell
