How Mormons Saw Romney -- In wooing evangelicals, he made some fellow LDS members uneasy
Newsweek ^ | February 8, 2008 | Sally Atkinson

Posted on 02/19/2008 4:46:10 PM PST by Zakeet

In his pursuit of the presidency, Mitt Romney held fast to his Mormon faith, though his religion remains controversial with evangelicals and some other Christians. But his determined (and ultimately futile) wooing of evangelicals led him to make some statements that didn't quite square with Mormon beliefs and culture. And the effort itself may have deepened the impression of him as inauthentic—even to some fellow Mormons.

Early in his presidential bid, Romney was asked what he thought of polygamy. Prompted by what they considered a divine revelation, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discontinued the practice more than a century ago, and the church distances itself from polygamist "fundamentalists." But Romney went one step further, saying he couldn't "imagine anything more awful than polygamy." Many Mormons were privately taken aback. Mormons believe that, in its time, "plural marriage" was a commandment from God, and they are, as a group, fiercely proud of their ancestors, hundreds of whom practiced polygamy. (Romney's own great-grandfather had five wives.) LDS church members loathe the polygamy stereotypes and jokes bandied by outsiders. But hearing Romney—the most recognizable face of their faith these days—disavow it in those terms was mildly unsettling to LDS insiders.

Others were puzzled to hear Romney say he reads the Gideon Bible—a version popular with evangelicals: Mormons uniformly study the King James version, in a Salt Lake edition that is cross-referenced to all other Mormon scripture. "Seems like he just figured he had to say the safest, most Protestant thing he could think of—that was kind of annoying," says Russell Arben Fox, a Mormon professor of political science at Friends University in Wichita, Kans.

D&C 95: 6, 12

Since you are quoting some D & C...

Hey Resty...

Joseph Smith stated that without the ordinances and authority of the priesthood no man can see the face of God and live (D & C 84:21, 22).

He also said that he saw God in 1820 (Joseph Smith 2:17).

How could that be....????

I know you say you are listening, but you aren’t because you refuse to accept what I and others tell you we believe. Trying to understand what Mormons believe is really easy. We have four main books of scripture that constitute the offical teachings of the church. If it is not in one of these books, or words spoken at a general conference, or has not been voted on and adopted by the first presidency of the church, its not an official teaching. Or, you could just ask us if we believe something. If you refuse to accept this, there is no hope of having a useful discussion with you.

Yes, most have and would distant themselves from that qoute if you asked them. It was never an official teaching of the church, so there is no reason for us to go around disavowing it.

I am glad that you have shown your true colors and called my religion a cult. Your agenda is revealed. I hope your hate doesn’t run too deep and hope that you will someday learn to exemplify the love Christ showed to all people. Someday, and I pray it is soon, you will let go of your ill-will towards Mormons and that you will embrace your fellows sons and daughters of God, realizing that we all have faults and all need Christ. I appreciate your prayers, as each needs all we can get. I will also pray for you and that the Lord will always guide you. I wish you well.

OO, let me tell you: Jesus Christ is head of the Priesthood. Says so in the New Testament. Get out your own Bible and look it up.

Of course, you have to admit that he REPENTED. Last time I checked, most of you folks consider REPENTENCE a work and not necessary for salvation, but the other guy didn’t get the not from Jesus, remember?

The point was that we do need works, and your conclusion that the story of the man on the cross proves that wrong doesn’t follow. (If that was your point) The guy died right after he repented. Had he lived, how do you know he wouldn’t have needed more works to be accepted by the Lord? That goes for any death-bed confession. Only the Lord can judge the hearts of men, and perhaps these death-bed confession are sincere and are in fact accepted by the Lord, but that doesn’t mean those of us who live don’t need to show works while we are in this life.

Repentence isn’t “works.”

The thief on the cross acknowledged he was a sinner.
Believed in Christ Jesus as Savior, who was there,
right then, dying on the cross....for him.
And it was counted unto him as righteousness.
His sins were forgiven.
And this is all that Christ would have each person believe.

The gift is freely given.
It must be accepted.
The thief did so.

And acceptance isn’t a “work”? Well, whatever you want to believe, but your “questions” have now been answered.

What does that mean ???
***It means the mormons who were supporting Romney on this forum could not hold their mud when their fallacies were exposed. Since Jesus was put to death on the cross due to the claim regarding his Deity, it strikes me as important to know for myself whether this really applies. Was Jesus a bigot who was properly put to death for His claim of equality with God? If yes, then yes, I’m a bigot as well and I’ll wear the term proudly, because I’ve come to the conclusion that He was God in the flesh. When it comes to the Deity of Christ, that’s the only time I really get involved with any ‘religious’ discussions. The mormons I’ve run into on this forum have attempted to redefine the terms when it comes to Jesus being God. Of course, all of this kind of discussion is pretty far removed from whether or not Romney would make a good president, so the discussion tends to get rapidly off course.

In what way is acknowledging a fact (believing) about a condition or state a “work”?

It’s merely agreeing with what is obvious.

Works goes beyond belief.

That's how politics works.

If that's your ultimate defense, then the destructo's should join the smarmy degenerate liberal Democrats.

That's how THEY do politics.

Conservative/Republicans should have an elevated sense of honor and justice.

After all, it is this country's well-being which should be the ultimate benefactor of political jousting, not one's petty little ego.

Luke 23:

39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

43 Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

This man did not WORK for his salvation. This man also did not need more than ONE “saving.” Christ’s death for him on the cross, ONCE, was more than enough to cover ALL this man’s sins.

The word “repent” is not in this text, is it? But even if it were, “repenting” is not a “work”. It is a change or heart about oneself and one’s actions. This man believed himself to be a sinner, deserving of death, and asked Christ as his Savior. There were no “works” involved. It required faith.

I know you say you are listening, but you aren’t because you refuse to accept what I and others tell you we believe.

I know exactly what your religion believes. You are in error there.

Trying to understand what Mormons believe is really easy. We have four main books of scripture that constitute the offical teachings of the church. If it is not in one of these books, or words spoken at a general conference, or has not been voted on and adopted by the first presidency of the church, its not an official teaching.

ROFLOL!!!! Are you kidding? I appreciate your lack of "discernment". HA!

VOTED ON??????????? Do you even realize what that means?

Do the writings of J. Smith and B. Young not really mean anything to you...or is it just situational?

Or, you could just ask us if we believe something. If you refuse to accept this, there is no hope of having a useful discussion with you.

Been down this road...hundreds of times. And you, and those like you..refuse to see what is right in front of your nose, that's okay. But don't try and blow smoke here.

Yes, most have and would distant themselves from that qoute if you asked them. It was never an official teaching of the church, so there is no reason for us to go around disavowing it.

One of your FOUNDATIONAL LEADERS...as a PROPHET made those statements....and you don't think that's significant??????

I am glad that you have shown your true colors and called my religion a cult. Your agenda is revealed. I hope your hate doesn’t run too deep and hope that you will someday learn to exemplify the love Christ showed to all people.

LOL!! I'm glad you've finally come to calling me a hater ( Like I couldn't have predicted that? LOL!!! )....Now I know I'm making you either think..or curl up into a ball.

TODAY, not someday....I pray that you will see that you are immersed in a cult....A cult like you've never imagined. Please see the light....Jesus is the WAY, the TRUTH, the LIFE..............
