Rev 3:20 is not an evangelical Scripture. The Lord is standing at the door of a church (the church of the Laodiceans), to see if anyone alive in Him is there. The context:
I understand what you are saying about the specific context in Revelations, but are you saying that that verse can NOT be used as an example of Jesus wanting fellowship with unbelievers?
What is your basis for such a belief?

It’s dangerous to use Scripture as an example for something it is not proclaiming, even if other Scripture makes the very point you are touting. If we do this - ignoring the context and, hence, the clear meaning - we are vulnerable to being led astray by similar tactics and/or being perceived as deceptive by those we seek to convince.
There is plenty of Scripture showing that Christ seeks out sinners and came to cleanse them. Use those with abandon in proclaiming that message.
