To walk worthily of this rebirth Jesus told Nicodemus about means to live daily in a 'crucified attitude' submitting the flesh (body and soul/behavior mechanism) for transformation. This is walking in faith, faithing (if there were such a verb in the English; it is the pisteou word in Greek translated as faith, believe, believing, etc. in the KJV).
If a day happens when you fail to be living in this frame of reference, God doesn't take His Holy Spirit out of your human spirit, because to restore Him to your spirit would require Jesus's blood to be reapplied and that is not necessary since His blood applied once was sufficient forever, for any who will trust Him to be Savior.
But His transforming power to 'resist the firey darts' of the adversary is not flowing from your spirit to your soul, your mind/emotions/will, if you fail to maintain the faithing reliance upon His presence in you. That is precisely why scriptures say 'to work out your own salvation with fear and trembling', because it is GOD (Jehovah Shammah) in you to will and to do of His good pleasure. If a bullet is embedded in the muscle of a deer you shot, rather than slice the meat into tiny pieces to get the bullet out, you work it out to the surface and remove it.
I just read your post today (Thanksgiving). Thanks for the well written and thought-out response. Having read many translated works, I know that some nuances and meanings are lost, but I was not familiar with the Greek term “metanoia,” which you descibed. It does shed light on the translated word “repentence.” Thanks.
