Mormons do not believe they are saved by grace alone either or they would not be required to do good works

You are correct in that mormons do not believe Jesus will save people IN their sins, rather FROM their sins. Semantics here are very important. Mormons believe we ARE saved by grace, after all we can do. Now "all we can do" is not a rigid definition, i.e. not everyone's "all" is the same. We are judged individually and perfectly, so what may be sufficient as far as effort for one may fall short for another. Again, I think the best way the belief is caputured is the differentiation in the meaning of saved "in sin" versus "from sin."

For clarification, look at the tent tabernacle and the blood on the Mercy Seat once per year for the sin of the people ... the people were not redeemed from their sins or in their sins, they were forgiven and made clean by edict of God ... this redempotion was in a sense a ‘chit’ a green card for the faithers which Jesus paid at the Cross.
