I've always said I'm sure there are saved Catholics, in spite of their religion...

Practice what you preach:

Oh really??? Have you ever told anyone on FR that your church is the one and only true church??? That's degrading everyone's church but your own...You ever tell a Protestant that he/she can't know for sure they are going to heaven (because you don't know about yourself)??? That's pretty degrading...

I'm not making any statement with respect to whether anybody ought to be troubled by the method used in their church. Naturally there are differences of opinion -- if you didn't think your church was right, I assume you wouldn't be attending there, and of course if I didn't think my church was right, I wouldn't be there either.

But unless you're a high church Episcopalian (as I used to be), your church doesn't subscribe to the doctrine of Transubstantiation, so really the details of matter/form/succession/language aren't as important. But in the Catholic church, they are very important. That's all I was saying.

So you can go out and get drunk or kill someone and you are still saved? Somehow, I don't think God's justice works that way.

The Pharisees and Saduccees thought they were saved, too, because they obeyed the law.

But Christ thought and told them otherwiae.

Did you deliberately misrepresent what I said or is it that you have difficulty in understanding a complex thought?

Do you believe it is ethical to take a few words totally out of context and present it as whole truth?

Didn't the post originally pertain to LDS and JWs?

Read #1623 again and tell me UU's were not included.

As for the Greek, I think the grammar would indicate Peter is the rock. However, how a passage is understood by the readers in a culture is probably at least as important as the grammar that readers removed from the sitz em leben by 2000 years read. And, yes, that cuts both ways.

Yet the CCC teaches that it was the rock of his faith upon which the Church was built.

424 Moved by the grace of the Holy Spirit and drawn by the Father, we believe in Jesus and confess: 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. On the rock of this faith confessed by St. Peter, Christ built his Church.

To be fair, the CCC also teaches Peter is the rock of his Church.

This is a major distinction.

I didn't think it was related to UU's because it didn't make any sense if it was about UU's. It's the Witnesses who come door to door and who prompt us to come up with strategies to keep them from eating up our day and leaving us percolating with frustration. SO I figured Salvation's remark MUST be about the JWs and maybe, by implication LDS'ers, but not y'all.

Thanks!

It's interesting to have purple feet! .. Each with like a 6" long incision and forty-eleven stitches in it. The stitches come out next week. I still have to spend this week off my feet most of the time.

I get my bandages changed today!

Oh happy day, kuloo kalae! I talked to the icon writer...she doesn't have an icon of St. Michael on hand, she said if you needed one quickly she could put a copy of one that she has done in the past on high quality card stock....I don't know if that's quite what you had in mind. I still would like to show you the one I have but I am apparently too liberally educated and have no useful knowledge whatsoever. So I will have to wait for hubby to upload the picture for me....I am sure it will be a major letdown after all this build up.

Which proves my point when I said to someone on this thread that Jesus extended his ministry to the Gentiles. Thanks.

Sure he did....but it was through Paul, Barnabas, Timothy, Mark, Luke and others, not of the original twelve....that this commission was given.

No point in yelling at Salvation, OR, she was responding to *my* joke. You can yell at me if you want but I think you misunderstood.

The UUs don't knock on anybody's door . . . that wasn't the point of the joke. The JWs and LDSs are the "knock knock" crowd.

This was prior to the Crucifixion, Christ later was quite clear when He said, "all nations" (your dispute of that has NEVER been accepted by the Church) and either way, it is irrelevant as there were Jews in Rome.

As I pointed out in post #1467 The wording in [Matthew 28:19-20] "All Nations" has a preferred meaning in the Greek of "All Tribes". You can see it here. The Greek word "Ethnos" is from whence we get our word "Ethnic" and in this case....Matthew is speaking of the Tribes of Israel. Gentile nations is a secondary meaning.

It matters not what the Church accepted....it matters that this would agree with other scripture. [Matthew 10:5-6] [Matthew 15:24][John 21:15-17][Galatians 2:7][James 1:1][1 Peter 1:1-2]

And, of course.....there were more Jews and "other" Israelites elsewhere......millions! These were the circumcised. Gentiles did not circumcise....as a rule.

See No. 1733.

Man, I never thought a "knock knock" joke was going to cause such consternation.

My daughter told me this one, which you are free to use. It has a physical component which I have to explain, but it is hilarious when done correctly.

"Knock Knock."

"Who's There?"

"Interrupting Starfish."

"Interrupting Starfish . . . . "

. . . at that point, you take your outspread hand and either shove it just in front of the other person's face or (if you know them well) adhere it to their face like the creature in "Alien".

Even my boss cracked up at that one.

However, as is often the case, confusion arises because although the New Testament was written in Greek, there is no reason to think that Christ and His disciples conversed among themselves in anything other than Aramaic (or possibly Hebrew).

God bless your heart! That sounds . . . interesting for anybody but you.

But you'll be better off without Paul and Pauline, once you get through this rocky stretch.

And speaking of feet, and just in case you don't know how stupid 16 year old boys can be . . . my son was fooling around with a can of Tinactin and turned it upside down and sprayed his feet with pure propellant. Four (2nd and 3rd degree) burns on the top of his right foot.

Of course he figured it would just go away if he ignored it, THREE WEEKS after this self inflicted injury he finally fesses up because he can hardly walk. One enormous weeping boil on the instep with a big chunk of necrotic tissue in the middle, two smaller ones on two toes.

When I finally stopped yelling at him, I called the dermatologist and got him over there today. They shot him full of lidocaine, then debrided everything and cut away the necrotic chunk. Sent him home with oral antibiotics, detailed dressing instructions . . . we're fortunate it wasn't much worse.

Anybody who thinks boys are easier than girls is NUTZ!

Is it important that there is a difference between 'literally millions" and "It is estimated that there may have been as many as one million Jews around Babylonia at that time"?

"One million Jews around Babylon at the time"....but the Jews were only one tribe of the Twelve Tribes of Israel...they were Judah. The other eleven tribes probably constituted quite a population in their own right. Perhaps another eleven million?

The Jews living in and around Babylon were the descendants of those Jews which did not return from the Babylonian captivity (600 B.C.)[Ezra and Nehemiah] The other Israelites (non Jews) had been taken captive to Assyria 125 years earlier and the scriptures do not record their return. It is to some of these folks we see Peter evangelizing in his first book.(verse 1) The other eleven tribes were among "the circumcised".

Staying off your feet is hard to do....boring. Good luck and blessings to you.

Thank you. I want to be able to give a handpainted icon, whether a copy or not don't matter so much nohow, after the Easter Vigil -- excuse me, the pagan fertility goddess over easy with home fries vigil. That's the time frame within which.
