Jesus established His Church and sent the Holy Spirit upon it to teach it all truth. The Church is the Pillar and Ground of Truth and Jesus said He who hears you hears me...

All that being true, any truth taught by that Church can not be "speculation"

It's an understandable (inevitable?) disagreement over authority.
