My favorite Roman Catholic spiritual writer, Thomas Merton, says that hell is where
"no one has anything in common with anybody else except the fact that they all hate one another and cannot get away from one another or from themselves." [New Seeds of Contemplation, Ch. 17]
Theologically, we understand hell as a state of permanent separation of the soul from God.
