Well, is it rational or not? Even the Christians need a sign. They claim the presence of the Holy Spirit. The modern-day version of Gnosticism I know, and you dont.
The Holy Spirit is not a "sign" - He is a Person, He is God. The Jews wanted miracles, the Greeks wanted logic. The subtext is condescension.
Christians, on the other hand, spiritually know God and are known of God.
There is no substitute.
