But to him that worketh not but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. (Rom.4:5).

The only thing counted for salvation is the faith.(Eph.2:9,Tit.3:5)

If it were of works, then God would owe something to the individual, which He doesn't, 'it is of faith, that it might be of grace' (Rom.4:16)
