Because of the kneeling boards, pews in a Catholic church are usually spaced further apart than other churches. Plus with chairs the space can be used for a variety of events simply by rearranging or stacking the chairs.

That is true. I never noticed a difference in the disposition of pews, Catholic vs. Protestant.
