The Rev. William Klock: "God Alone is Able"

From the Rev. William Klock of Christ Church REC in Oregon, we have another sermon in his excellent series on Genesis, God Alone is Able. This sermon is based on Genesis 12:10-14:24, and Rev. Klock begins his sermon thus:

I’m reminded as we enter Passiontide, the God’s salvation is always accomplished. Unfaithful men tried to undo or foil the promises of God throughout the Old Testament and in the Gospels we read how sinful men, angry with Christ’s message, killed him in their attempt to foil his plan. But we know that God is always faithful to bring about what he has promised. In our lessons from Genesis this morning we see Abram’s faith grow has he comes to understand that God is always faithful, even when we are not. That even when we step out of his will, God always brings his chosen people back and fulfils his promises to them. Our collect this morning is an acknowledgement on our part that in his mercy, God is governs both are bodies and souls: “We beseech thee, Almighty God, mercifully to look upon thy people; that by thy great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore, both in body and soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Those who crucified Christ meant it for evil, but even they were being governed by God who used their godless actions to accomplish his purpose.

I introduced Abram last week and talked a little bit about how his life demonstrates the sovereignty of God. Last week we looked at his origins and his faithfulness to God’s calling. This week I want to cover a good bit of ground and look at the short accounts that follow Abraham’s arrival in Canaan. They may, at first glance, look a bit disjointed, but the fact is that the narrator arranged them this way because they all make the same point and that point is much the same point that we find in our proper for Passion Sunday: that God is in control, that only God can accomplish salvation, and that God will accomplish that salvation. ...
I think you will find that Rev. Klock does indeed cover a good bit of ground--but he does so very well; see what you think.
