"if a book didn't specifically say a certain thing could be done, it can't be done"

You talk as though The Word Of God were just another book, to be argued with, taken with a grain of salt, even changed, as we see happening these days.

Not so. It's the only book God ever wrote, and He expects it to be taken more seriously. You eternity depends on it, not on the Pope. He won't be there when you die and stand before The Judge.

And you talk as if the sky parted, the Bible floated down, and God said: "This is my book, with which I am well pleased!"

First of all, the New Testament was not always considered Scripture in the sense of the Old Testament. Second, Jesus never told the Apostles to write the New Testament nor did He tell them to add writings to the existing Hebrew Scriptures. Third, it took several hundred years for the New Testament to come to gether and to be canonized as authoritative.

And who did all of this? The Catholic Church. It would serve you well to study the history of Christianity.

Also, since you seemed to ignore my comments about Purgatory, I'm assuming you have no objection to them?
