Wearing holy undergarments, I guess, is a work, too.
I think if God wanted us to baptism to be the requirement for salvation, He in His wisdom would have made it clear that the thief on the cross was indeed baptized.
BTW, I've heard Baptists do not consider it to be important to salvation, only as free will proof in front of living witnesses that your life has been changed from sin to salvation by Jesus.
Well, grace is grace. If you disdain it or hold it cheap, so will God.
