He was a very spiritual man and inspired many in his time but he was a poor systematic theologian and created some mischief with scripture.

And Calvin didn't??? Again, Calvin's claim to fame was his eigesis of Luther's novel ideas of faith alone and his systematic misinterpretation of St. Augustine. I have enjoyed some of Wesley's interpretations of the Scriptures, they have helped me to open up the meaning of particular passages. Of course, I don't agree with everything he wrote. Calvin, on the other hand, must twist Scriptures and ignore much of it to come up with his theology. I don't get much from him, merely because his paradigm is way off.

Both Calvin and Luther readily acknowledged that they were reviving Augustine's exposition of the doctrine of sovereignty. Calvin's Institutes were essentially a formal and legal argument for Augustine's well-defined position. Calvin's training as a lawyer is pretty evident.

Among professional theologians, Calvin's original work as a theologian is considered to be his seminal writings on the nature of the Holy Ghost, a matter that had been previously neglected. As with his other work, Calvin stopped writing where scripture was silent.

Calvin has many aspects. Calvin the theologian when writing of the Holy Spirit, Calvin the Reformer in the Institutes, Calvin the teacher in his Commentaries (greatly admired by even his greatest opponents), and Calvin the founder of modern democratic republics like America. His life and work are much excluded in modern times as our religious and political elites fear the message he expounded from scripture. Arminian Christianity is a safe little harmless creature, bending to every manipulation. The true faith, however, is never loved by the world and is hated by it.

I thought I'd flag Dr. E. since she posted a snippet about Calvin and his writing on the third member of the Trinity.
