Paul isn't talking about pagans, but other Christians who are baptizing their dead. I don't agree with your explanation of this Scripture. I think it was a valid practice at first, but later done away with.

If Baptism of the dead was a valid practice, then do you know why it was done away with? Was this an official Church practice at one time?

I don't know if it ever was officially done by every community, but Paul validates that the Corinthains did it. It seems to have fallen out of favor pretty quickly.
