"This is the plain meaning of the charge to Peter, his letters, and it is illustrated in the Acts where the Jerusalem Councils are described promulgating the doctrine. It is left to what you might call the "professionals", and we all are the sheep."

No, it is left to the Holy Spirit, who illumines the scriptures to the mind of believers who then are responsible to be doers of it. No where in scripture does it give the interpretation responsibility to the "professionals". we have no other mediator of the scriptures except the Holy Spirit. We have preacher/teachers, but the responsibility to discern if what they are teaching corresponds with the scripture is left up to the believer and the Bible. Look at these verses:

Jhn 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, [even] the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

Jhn 14:26 But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

1Jo 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him

2Ti 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Those verses refer to the apostles and to the ordained priests; 1 John 2:27 even expressly so. There is no scripture that condones private interpretation, and 2 Peter 1:20 specifically forbids it.

And the Holy Spirit revealed Himself in 33,000 (and growing) different versions of Protestant truths, I suppose. They all claim to be lead by the Holy Spirit.
