Moving quickly to replace Archbishop Domenico Sorrentino, who was named three weeks ago to the Umbrian diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino, Benedict XVI has tapped Archbishop Albert Malcolm Ranjith Patabendige Don, the Sri Lanka-born nuncio to Indonesia and East Timor, to be Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
This is another one of those appointments which is a surprise to 99% of everyone. A few weeks ago, I got an e.mail from someone who turned out not to be in the know, claiming that an English-speaking "Indian" was being mentioned, "but nobody seriously believes he will be named." Hmm. Oh well.
My favorite analysis of the Don appointment came in another note kindly shot my way: "I guess if you have dealt with the civil war in Sri Lanka and the military in Indonesia and Timor, then you're ready to deal with the machinations of Trautperson."
It's inculturation time.

Hey, Princess Grow-a-Pair, I hate to throw the monkeywrench of truth into your macho-butch rant, but Rocco is NOT a Philly priest.
He's a layman.
Who is extraordinarily well-informed.
Which you, apparently, are not!
So congratulations! Besides being a vulgar idiot, you're also . . . well, a misinformed idiot.
And re: growing things. Why don't you grow a brain - only once you do, do us all a favor, and don't bother coming back next year - or ever.
Nighty night, Princess!
And you were telling me to be charitable. If you defend Rocco, then just be aware of what he stands for, again read his blog archives.
Good for you! Sadly this is not the first story of DRE's being way out of control, along with their weak minded pastors either encouraging them or coming up with the lame brained ideas to begin with. Unfortunately I am not surprised that you had such a hard time trying to get the pastor, and ultimately the diocese, to do the right thing. Especially considering some of the things, dance included, which occured at papal masses under JPII. Hopefully things will change with the current administration!
If it's the "Rocco" of the blog, he claims therein to be a priest of Philly. He also quit blogging but returned in a few days--couldnt' stand to be out of the limelight.
But Taxy will continue his/its banshee howling-from-tutu-land, regardless.
I am training my children to laugh at PC-speak.
I always change words (such as lastnames or other words that end in -man, or -son, etc.) and neuter them.
We all laugh and it gives me a chance to point out that some people really do think that way despite how absurd it can become.
And I ALWAYS use the word "priestess" when referring to any woman who claims to be an ordained priest (regardless of denomination).
