Some have suggested that the "messenger" was a false teacher sent by Satan to give him much grief. Having dealt with false teachers, I can empathize.
Grief is grief ... Paul asked for relief ... he didn't get it.
My point was the difference between a physical malady, vs. persecution, which category the false teacher falls into.
