Ignoring the silly false dichotomy you've set up here (Science vs. the controlling thumb of "The (Catholic) Church".) you'll see where a secular society will get us, and is getting us.

I'd much rather have a Catholic or even a Jewish state than a pseudo-Christian secular state.
