In practice, yes, in most of the dioceses around the world.

The Old Mass was never abrogated. Therefore Saint John Paul The Great cannot be credited with re-allowing it. Also, if it were really his wish for the Old Mass to be widely available, why was he impotent in the face of so many bishops who chose to blow him off completely? Doesn't sound so Great to me. Sorry.

This is what Cardinal Ratzinger witnessed, and what he regarded as disastrous.

Well, he's certainly in a position now to do something to correct the disaster, isn't he? I hope you're not holding your breath.

I have never attended WYD

Nor I. Deo Gratias!

but I do remember John Paul's magnificent homily from Denver, challenging abortion and the rest of the "culture of death."

Challenging abortion? Are you kidding me? What credit can be given to the Supreme Pontiff for going on record against abortion? Is this what made him Great? I think everyone's Greatness scales need a little recalibrating.

No, I'm not holding my breath. I'm supporting the Holy Father with my prayers, as you should be.

From what I've read JPII didn't have an attachment to the Tridentine, mainly because he was absolutely for Liturgical reform via inculturation. Evidently, he thought that was a more efficient way of spreading the Gospel.

The reason I say that I don't believe JPII was very attached to the Tridentine is that the tone of Ecclesia Dei was somewhat that of a concession to the Faithful who sought it, but not at all a strong defense of the Mass itself.

Back in 1988, Ratzinger said the Old Mass would not return. By that I assume he meant its everyday use. My guess he will now concentrate on reforming Novus Ordo both in an attempt to rehabilitate Vatican II and to rescue the reputation of JPII. Politically, he has little to gain in heavily promoting the Old Mass instead of a revised Novus Ordo. Traditionalists are in danger of expecting too much from the new pope weighed down by the baggage of forty years.
