Perhaps you saw the pictures of Mel Gibson and Sister Lucia's meeting posted on the web a few months ago. They met at her request.
The pictures were held until an appropriate time for several reasons. One is that Gibson didn't want to make it appear that he was using Sister for promotion of his movie. He gave her an advance copy of the Passion. Sister did not look the least bit "disabled" but bright and cognizant as to the meeting -- behind a windowed screen, of course.

Old people who are deaf don't need Portuguese translators. The Vatican pulled a fast one on Mel. The nun pictured wasn't 97, blind and deaf.
Let's just hope the funeral is open, honest, and straightforward.
