Obviously you thought we would be effective or you would not have come crying to us.

Sounds to me like he thought you would be effective and you let him down.

Here's a suggestion, next time you get yourself buried in the corner and can't handle cults, don't call the Christians to come bail you out.

Right. Now "Calvinist" and "Christian" are uniquely interchangable terms? You guys are the Christians and Mack is a.... what exactly?

Fool me once, shame on you.

Fool me twice, shame on me.

No. Just shame on you.

Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, "I am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Cephas," and "I of Christ." and "I of Calvin" and "I of Wesley" and "I of Luther" and "I of Baptist"

Excellent post.

The Protestant church has many names, but we are dead because we do not focus on the name of Christ.

I may have an alternative for you.... :-)

I am not interested in Thyatira (RCC Church) either :) I would much rather be involved with the Church at Philadelphia (brotherly love).

And in the interests of ego and pride, namely my own, I would like to congratulate myself on winning the NES Bracket challenge. Go me.

Way to go. And you beat out the infallible pope in order to do so.

My only consolation is that my Pitt Panthers actually beat the champs this year, and put on a much more impressive showing against them in MSG for the Big East final. A three-pointer at the end and you would have had, for the second consecutive year, the Big East runner up winning the NCAA championship.

Excuse you, I was brought into this thread, by Mack, and left when Mack felt comfortable coming out of hiding. It appears now that I have been brought back into this thread. Don't like my posts? Don't read them.

The Protestant church has many names, but we are dead because we do not focus on the name of Christ. We latch on to the names of men and quarrel amongst ourselves, diverting us from the call of Christ and the message of the Gospel.

Most Protestants are not divisive, but inclusive, by nature. We worship together, regardless of denomination, and enjoy fellowship with one another.

OTOH, it is easy to see what portions of the church tend toward divisiveness, as such is evident in their speech and manner.

I, likely, am not stating anything you do not already know or recognize ... just trying to sound an encouraging note.

Thanks for the warning.

God bless ...

Sorry, you've picked an emormously busy time on the thread. Usually you'd get more options form the folks here, btu we're caught in a bit of a dispute right now.

Luke 23:
38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Short, simple and to the point. We deserve death, everlasting death. But Jesus, hanging on the Cross offers to us forgiveness and salvation if we but ask for it.

It's a microcosm of the Cross, done while He was actually hanging on the Cross.

I did not ask you to come over here. If I remember correctly, I asked Mom to come over and slap ET around, that was it.

To put it another way, Steven, by trying to eschew the pagan and find the pure God has discovered that even our Jesus is a pagan accretion. And ironically, a relationship with this pagan god led him to the True God.

Um Dave, Jesus IS the True God. You cannot reject A and believe A at the same time.

I am commenting on the irony of Steven's trajectory, not expressing my own belief.

Of course, I believe Jesus is True God. Sorry for being confusing.

Is this where Vatican II has brought the RCC? When a pretty faithful RC can see no real big deal about a guy leaving Christ, and actually defend the person's decision.

I did no such thing and Vatican II has nothing to do with it. Steven has his eyes open, as far as he can tell. No amount of me arguing with him is going to change his mind. He knows how I feel and has known from day one.

That's why I thought the irony might get to him, if he could understand it. But since no one seems to have gotten what I was trying to say, I must admit I failed to make my point.

There were actually two points. First, as I said already, that a journey that began with rejecting a Church in favor of private understanding based upon a Book and a Person has led in order to the rejection of both Book and Person.

One shudders to think of what can survive the next round of applying the same lens to his newfound faith. Will he discover that the Babylonians also have flood myths, and some date these to be older than the Hebrew accounts? Using the same methods used to deconstruct Christianity, he can deconstruct Judaism.

I hope he chooses to simply accept something on faith before he is left with nothing.

The second point has to do with the use of pagan spirituality to prepare people for accepting the True God. In Steven's estimation Jesus is false. And yet his relationship with "Jesus" led to a closer relationship with God.

How and why this could happen is an interesting subject. And since so much of the Messianic lore is bulit around similarities between Christianity and pagan beliefs, one should pause to examine it. Does a pagan god being virgin born mean that the pagans were pre-disposed (by God, even) to accept the Truth of the Virgin Born Jesus or that the Christians stole the story and incorporated it into their myths?

This is what happens when you say that the Jewish people are in a saving Covenant and have no need of Jesus.

We don't say that. But this post is long enough already. One Cardinal running his mouth does not a doctrine make.

Have you considered a devotion to St. Patrick? ;-)

May I have your attention, please!

The tone of some of the past day's posts has been excessively heated. I'd like to request that everyone make an effort to keep the discussion civil.

It would be better to ignore provocative posts entirely rather than respond to them in anger.

The Religion Moderator was courteous in allowing me to make this request. Let's not blow it, guys.

Thanks!

Today and tomorrow, the first two days of Passover, are Jewish holy days. Please don't make it necessary for me to post again.

You think, Mal? Things didn't seem heated to me and I though the debate interesting. Who was angry? Are we just supposed to hold hands and smile now. No discussion about God or Christ any more?
