I remember that!
That's when Allah was grilling our troop's stomachs in hell and the daughters of Islam were killing our weaklings with their hands. Of course, thanks for reminding me of the press reports of the day.

Thanks for posting this. This is hilarious. Delusional, wishful thinking printed as news. No bias here, nope.

Well, the margin's only about 1.1 million votes. The Los Angeles Times is still waiting for some more Marin County precincts to report. And the Latino vote may yet bail out Davis, don't ya think? And of course, Davis will take the women's vote after all of those Times stories, right? The women's vote must not have been counted yet... yeah, that's the ticket. And all of those minority voters who were to stupid to... oh, ummm, who were disenfranchised, well that explains the low turnout... hmmm? You say the turnout wasn't low? Well, never mind that. Just wait till those Korean votes come in...

There are no Republicans within 100 miles of Sacramento!

I am so glad you found this and posted it. Sure shows what a top notch news organization Reuters is.

(Prop 53: YES|Prop 54: YES|Recall: YES|Governor: TOM, but will settle for Arnie)
To: ambrose
I'll admit that I thought this recall would actually be much closer (I predicted 51-49 Yes), but some people here were predicting in the upper fifties, and I even saw a couple of predictions for the low sixties!
I'm ecstatic as hell that Davis is out (he fully deserved it), but in my opinion it doesn't bode well for us at all that a liberal Republican could only manage 54% running against someone who is quite possibly the most unpopular elected official in American history. I hate to say it, but we shouldn't delude ourselves into thinking that California is in play for Bush next year.

Plus Arnold is much much to the left of Bush. I doubt that he'll be trumpeting Bush's policies on the environment, gays, abortion, etc. If he does, those RATS and spineless INDIES who make up the core of his "base" will dessert him quick as quick can be.
I really think Arnie is more likely to remake the California Republican party in his own image than the party is likely to pull him to the right.
Once you've won a victory on the basis of the RINO brew of fiscal conservatism, anti-gun, pro-abortion, environmentalism, pro gay-rights, how possibly do you ever move to the right?
To: jpl
Arnold ran as a conservative, not as a liberal Republican! Guess which area of California shunned him? Hint: its the Ground Zero of all the anti-SUV wackos. Californians decided a man who loves Hummers can't be all that bad. And I'm enjoying the liberals trying to spin the election as being about personality and not philosophy this morning. Can you name ONE liberal ideal people are attracted to? Heck, I can't.

Hey, jpl, add McC's vote to Ah-nold's and you get 60% of the vote. Three of every five votes cast yesterday went to Republicans. And Bust-A-Move only got 23%. I wouldn't be so pessimistic if I were ye.

Those were NOT the issues in this campaign. He ran on clearly conservative themes: eliminating the car tax, reducing spending, and not increasing taxes, and making government accountable. The themes Ronald Reagan ran on back in 1966. They are still resonating across California. Cruz Bustamante ran as a liberal Democrat and won only the Bay Area. If you think the socialism the Democratic Party here is so infatuated with even has a future, think again. 61% of Californians want nothing to do with it.

I don't think you are thinking straight.
Of course, those social issues were not the issues. They couldn't have been. Arnie would have lost if he had run as a social conservative.
He ran on fiscally conservative issues.
I was saying he's going to make fiscal conservativism + social liberalism the mantra of the new California GOP. He's never going to come over to social conservatism. He's never going to have to.
I'm not sure what you are trying to say. Are you objecting to that analysis?
If so, on what basis?
To: goldstategop
Don't get me wrong, Arnold is light-years ahead of Davis, and Bush is of course light-years ahead of any of the losers in the Democratic field, and I desperately want to see Bush win. But Bush's disapproval rating is actually higher than his approval rating right now in California (though well within the margin of error).
I think it's going to be really interesting to see how high-profile a role Arnold ends up getting at the Republican convention next year.

Of course he's never going to become a social conservative. Conservatism is a "Big Tent" philosophy. There are all kinds of conservatives. And people like to pick and choose what fits their outlook. California is a live and let live state and at the same time rejects Nanny State socialism.
