I remember a day (years ago) he was slurring badly. It was before his hearing loss was publicized.
This was not the strange vocal tones I later noticed. It was true drunken slurring.
Then it became truly bizarre. Later in the program, he claimed that a hacker had gotten into his broadcast and somehow slowed his speech down and made him sound like he was stoned.
I vividly recall thinking that sounded very implausible.

For a while the engineers on his show manipulated his voice - lengthening out the sounds because his 'unhearing' voice was so high pitched. It never worked well.
