Looks like a good story line for Six Feet Under.

Eventually she'll grow into that coffin.

Or simply "super-size" it: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=448034

I'd say just blenderize her at some local pet food processor and pump the muck into drums. Either that or cash in on the $0.50/lb. rate for offal.

if there were no caskets available with enough volume for this woman, it would not be very difficult or expensive to build one. nor is it difficult to find someone capable of building one.

this leaves me with two possible conclusions:
1) the members of the family are truely stupid. they did not get a large enough box to begin with. further more, they did not stop the service after seeing that the volume of the casket was simply not large enough.

2) the family is looking to milk some money out of the undertakers. something along the lines of a cut rate for the unsatisfactory service.

are there any other possible reasons for this families behavior?

Cremation was the solution in this case.

RIP.

I'll bet a custom casket could have been made for this woman but the family would have screamed at the cost. If they were not happy with the unclosed casket why didn't they stop the burial until some kind of container could be found. They waited until it was done to complain.

Mercedes Norris said the funeral director's explanation is not enough to comfort her family.

But the six figure, out of court settlement certainly will..

Casket Wouldn't Close, Children Say

They should've buried her in a piano case, as was done with Robert Earl Hughes (the fattest man who ever lived).

I only had to roll a few posts down to see the pathetic comments. Regardless of what those who like to make fun of fat people think, this woman was someone's mother, sister, daughter. She was not a criminal and from all accounts did nothing reprehensible and had a vice with food(and that is even speculative..the woman could have been on steroids long before her death that blew her up). She doesn't deserve to be made fun of and none of you would think treatment of your loved one after death in such a way would be acceptable. The woman was grossly overweight, she was not a monster or any less human than a 63 yr old woman of average weight. The funeral home is the last stop for many of us in the world and we should expect to be treated with some basic respect and dignity on our way out.

How can it be "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" if the body is embalmed and sealed into an air tight box? This body may be the only American body that has followed the natural law in decades.

"My mom had a lot of dignity,"

Her 500lb. bulk notwithstanding, right?

"My mom had a lot of dignity," she said. "She may have been a big woman, but she was a good woman. And he had no right to bury her like that."

This woman's weight is testament both to how much the woman herself and her family cared for her while she was alive. Now they are upset that no better care could be taken after her death. I'm repulsed; but, not by this poor funeral director who was probably doing everything he could to deal with an unrealistic expectation. Coffins ain't cheap. And you don't just design one overnight to handle that load. It isn't like making a mailbox. My bet is, they didn't want to pay for a custom one to be made. We'll see.

Couldn't they build a custom box? Why are Americans so helpless these days?
