Chamber Releases Recall Poll - Results Indicate that Schwarzenegger Makes Significant Gains after Wednesday Debate

SACRAMENTO - The California Chamber of Commerce today released a poll regarding the recall election, showing Arnold Schwarzenegger has made significant gains over the last two weeks. The poll includes voter interviews taken after the Wednesday, September 24 debate in Sacramento, California and shows that if the election were held today, Mr. Schwarzenegger would lead Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante and all the replacement candidates in the race.

“Earlier this month, the California Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to endorse Arnold Schwarzenegger for Governor on the second question of the recall ballot. This poll shows Mr. Schwarzenegger making significant gains and is still the most competitive of the pro-jobs candidates on the ballot,” said Allan Zaremberg, President, California Chamber of Commerce.

The poll was conducted by Baselice & Associates, Inc., September 24-25, 2003 among N=804 likely voters. The results carry a margin of error of +/-3.5% at the .95 test level.

“In the second part of the recall election, voters now prefer Arnold Schwarzenegger (35%) over Cruz Bustamante (31%). Following the two frontrunners are Tom McClintock at 17%, Peter Miguel Camejo at 4%, Arianna Huffington at 3% and Larry Flynt 1%. These results included respondents who are in leaning in favor of a candidate,” said Mike Baselice, Baselice & Associates.

Arnold made a mistake when he turned down Davis' debate challenge. A debate would make the political faultline clearer.

Once again. If only half the people planning to vote for Schwarzenegger think McClintock is a better choice and more conservative, voting for McClintock would put him over the top.

McClintock can win.

Tom's has less than half of Arnie's support, and is 18% away from him, just over a week away from the election. Busty-the-friendly-hispanic-racist-monte is within the margin of error of Arnie.

By any sane measure, it's well past time for Tom to get out and back the party's best shot. But Tom, despite his excellent stands on important issues, is not quite sane, I'm sorry to say....

Tom McClintock keeps advancing, even without $8,000,000 big ones. Arnie keeps flushing his donations down the toilet, in the hopes of convincing enough McClintock supporters he cares about the issues that concern them. Problem is, McClintock supporters have been waiting almost two months for Arnie to address the concerns of conservative Republicans and so far, only silence from Arnie. Chances are, even if Arnie is fortunate enough to win the recall election, as governor he's gonna care even less about the issues of concern to conservative Republicans.

If Arnie loses, he only has himself to blame. Arnie has run a pathetic campaign and is hoodwinking the people of California.

very interesting to compare this poll with CofC's last poll:

Arnold went from 28% to 35% - up 7%
Busty went from 33% to 31% - down 2%
Tom Mc went from 12% to 17% - up 5%

Republicans gain 12%, Busty slips 2%, net gain for Rs = 14%.
Not too shabby.

Trend - Arnold is Governor S.

It's amazing that Arianna has gotten as much attention as she has. There really is no reason for it - she has been stuck in the low single digits at every stage.

The media definietly promotes bomb-throwers like her, when she is tossing bombs at us, that is!

More interesting to me than the Chamber of Commerce Poll is the FReeper Poll. Arnold now leads Tom about 51-45 (adding the "Still with Arnold" numbers to the "Changed to Arnold" numbers, and the same for Tom).

As of a couple of minutes ago, the numbers looked like this:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the big debate, have you changed your mind about who you support for Governor of California?
Still with McClintock
708 votes (37.84%)
Still with Schwarzenegger
783 votes (41.85%)
Changed to McClintock
133 votes (7.11%)
Changed to Schwarzenegger
168 votes (8.98%)
Other
79 votes (4.22%)
1,871 votes total
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So it looks like among "voting" FReepers (granted, non-Californians are voting, too), Arnold is leading Tom. If Tom can't outpoll Arnold in this non-scientific, very right-biased sampling, where under God's yellow sun can he?

It is not surprising that Tom is getting support or at least favorable words from such odd quarters as Indian Tribes, Ralph Nader, and even Bustamonte. Tom needs to do the right thing, and withdraw. It would be in his own best interests to do so; he can't win, and if he causes the election of Bustamonte, he'll be dead politically forever. My guess is he'll do just that, and live to fight another day, perhaps against Boxer in '04.

I'm in Pennsylvania and I have no dog in your fight.

But why is it that California needs a new Governor?

Why not just secede from the U.S.?

Maybe Vincente Fox will take you in.

Hopefully before you slide into the sea.

Just kidding. Arnold is your best hope for salvation, IMHO.

At the rate McClintock's "surging" it will take some time for him to over take Ahnold:

If only we could postpone the election till Feb!

Maybe we should not have laughed at the 9th Circus so loudly.
