He can remain on the ballot - but announce that he is suspending his campaign and asking his supporters to vote for Arnold.

This would allow him to keep his word while ensuring that Bustamante does not get elected.

To save face, McClintock could stay in the race until October 7th, but a few days before election day, McClintock could throw his support to Arnold and encourage Californians to vote for Arnold.
